Gore advances to Porum tournament semifinals; Gans squads to play tonight

By DAVID SEELEY SPORTS EDITOR

PORUM — The Gore High School basketball teams reached the Cross Telephone Invitational Basketball Tournament championship semifinals on Tuesday, but by different means.

The Pirates routed the Weleetka Outlaws junior varsity team 6941 to advance to Thursday night’s championship semifinals against the host Porum Panthers, a 56-29 winner over Midway.

The Gore-Porum winner will meet the Weleetka-Hulbert winner for the tournament title at 8:30 p.m. Saturday, while the losers of the two championship semifinals will play for third place at 5:30 p.m. Saturday.

On the other hand, the Gore Lady Pirates advanced to Thursday night’s championship semifinals, but did not have to score a point to do so. The Lady Pirates advanced to Thursday night’s championship semifinals against Hulbert, a 74-21 winner over the Weleetka JV on Tuesday afternoon, when the host Lady Panthers had to cancel the game due to lack of numbers due to a flu outbreak.

The Gore-Hulbert girls winner will face the Weleetka-Midway winner for the title at 7 p.m. Saturday. The two championship semifinals losers will meet for third place at 4 p.m. Saturday.

The Gans teams will return to action in today’s consolation semifinals.

The Lady Grizzlies will meet Keota at 4 p.m., with the winner meeting the Porum-Weleetka JV winner for the consolation championship at 1 p.m. Saturday. The loser will be eliminated.
