Muldrow sweeps Central, Lady Tiger eclipses 1,000 points

By DAVID SEELEY SPORTS EDITOR

The Muldrow High School basketball teams took the short trip west to meet the Central squads Saturday afternoon at the Central Gym. The short return trip home was a happy one as the Muldrow teams posted the sweep.

The Lady Bulldogs opened the late afternoon hoop twinbill with a 50-38 win over the Lady Tigers, then the ’Dogs put the bite on the Tigers with a 64-35 victory to close out the day.

A basket by Central’s Haley Cheek put the Lady Tigers (16-5) ahead for the last time at 11-9 with 2:31 left in the first quarter.

Back-to-back baskets by Kayla Ellingberg and London Hardin put the Lady Bulldogs (13-8) in front 13-11, only to see the game get tied for the fifth time in the period as Central’s Cambree Bair, who eclipsed the 1,000-point mark of her prep career, hit two free throws with 1:15 remaining in the quarter to knot the game at 13-all.

Muldrow’s Gracie Prewett scored the period’s final three points to put Muldrow ahead for good at 16-13 after the first eight minutes.

A 7-0 run to open the second quarter for the Lady Bulldogs, capped by both a 3-point basket and a conventional hoop by Maysi Fields, put Muldrow ahead 23-13 with 6:16 left before halftime.

The Lady Bulldogs finished the period with a 8-6 run to take a 31-19 lead into the locker rooms at halftime.

A free throw followed by a basket by Kilah Ellingberg to begin the third quarter gave Muldrow its biggest lead of the night at 34-19 with 6:33 left in the period.

The Lady Tigers made a run as a basket by Bair with 34 seconds left in the period capped a 13-3 run for Central to cut its deficit to 37-32 after three quarters. However, that ended up being as close as the Lady Tigers would get.

The Lady Bulldogs outscored the Lady Tigers 13-6 in the fourth quarter to seal the deal.

For the game, Hardin scored a game-high 13 points to lead Muldrow, followed by Kilah Ellingberg and Jensi Fields with nine points each, Kayla Ellingberg and Maysi Fields each with six points, Chloee Clark with four points and Prewett with three points.

In defeat, Bair scored a game-high 14 points and Cheek added 10 points to lead Central, followed by Ayrland Jiles with six points, Hadlie Woods with five points and Ryleigh Pierce with three points.

Central junior Cambree Bair eclipsed the 1,000-point mark for her prep career during Saturday’s loss to Muldrow. She was awarded a special commemorative basketball by her coach, Shane Brown, recognizing her accomplishment.

BOYS

MULDROW 64, CENTRAL 35

It appeared that the game would be fairly close throughout, if the first quarter had anything to say.

After a Teaguen Collins basket put the Bulldogs (15-6) ahead 7-1 with 6:58 left in the first quarter, the Tigers (14-7) responded with a 6-3 run, capped by a free throw by Hardy Buzzard, to cut the Central deficit to 10-6 with 3:40 left in the period.

The ’Dogs ended the quarter with a 4-2 run, capped by Parker Sevenstar’s basket with 1:30 remaining in the period to put Muldrow ahead 14-8 after the end of the first quarter. However, that ended up being the last point of the game in which the content was a close one.

The Bulldogs bit the Tigers to the tune of 22-4 in the second quarter to take a 36-12 halftime lead en route to a 54-26 advantage going into the final period.

For the game, Jesse Kilinc continued his hot shooting as he connected on six 3-point baskets en route to a game-high 24 points to lead Muldrow, followed by Collins with 12 points, Jaxson Anstine with seven points, Sevenstar and D.J. Massey with six points each, Jack Pyeatt with four points, Brady Boshers and Zeeshan Bukhari each with two points and DeShawn Willson with a free throw.

In defeat, Braxin Goodson scored seven points to lead Central, followed by Gavin Randolph, Joe Brooks, Paitton Merrill, Hardy Buzzard and Aidan Sainer with four points each, O’Dell Parker and Noah Buzzard each with two points and Nathan Vann, Brycen Chandler-Eisman, Cale Stewart and Aiden Cawhorn with a free throw apiece.
