Sallisaw, Muldrow, Roland teams find out district assignments

By BY DAVID SEELEY SPORTS EDITOR

The Sallisaw, Muldrow and Roland basketball teams found out on Friday where their district assignments are from the Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association (OSSAA).

The Sallisaw, Muldrow and Roland basketball teams found out on Friday where their district assignments are from the Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association (OSSAA).

The news was good for both Muldrow and Roland as they were named a respective district tournament host school, while Sallisaw will have to travel once again.

The Lady Diamonds and Black Diamonds were sent to Wagoner for a Class 4A District Tournament, while Muldrow’s teams will get to entertain Stigler in another Class 4A District Tournament.

The Runnin’ Rangers and Lady Rangers will not get a bye right into being home for a regional tournament, as was the case as season ago. Instead, the Roland squads will get to be home for Antlers for their Class 3A District Tournaments.

The Class 3A and 4A District Tournaments will be Feb. 21-22.

CLASS A, 2A PLAYOFFS BEGINNING FRIDAY

The Class A and 2A playoffs will begin Friday.

In Class 2A, the Central teams will entertain Hulbert on Friday, while the Vian teams will visit Talihina on Saturday.

Both Central and Vian will see their teams play in next week’s Class 2A Regional Tournament, with the winners of their games going into the regional as winner’s-bracket teams and the losers as consolation-bracket teams.

It’s not as cut and dried in Class A, where there are three-team district tournaments.

In one Class A District Tournament on Friday in Weleetka, the Gans teams will face Porum, with the winners meeting the host Lady Outlaws and Outlaws in the district finals on Saturday night — but still advancing to play in next week’s regional tournament. Friday night’s losers will be eliminated from postseason play.

The Gore Pirates will not only have a chance to play for a district title Saturday night in Quinton, but will be playing in next week’s Class 2A Regional Tournament regardless of the outcome.

The Gore Lady Pirates will meet Davenport at 6:30 p.m. Friday for the right to meet district-host Quinton for the district title on Saturday night. Friday night’s Gore-Davenport loser will be eliminated from the playoffs.

The Webbers Falls squads will meet Cameron on Friday night in the Class A District Tournament in Red Oak, with the winners meeting the host Lady Eagles and Eagles for the district championships on Saturday night. Friday night’s losers will be eliminated from postseason play.

The second season is now upon us. Let the games begin.

WAY TO GO, CAMBREE

Central Lady Tigers basketball player Cambree Bair surpassed the 1,000-point mark during Saturday afternoon’s home game loss to Central. She was presented a special basketball denoting the historic moment by Central girls coach Shane Brown. Congratulations, Cambree!

WEEK 8 INDIVIDUAL HIGHLIGHTS

What a week it was last week for Roland freshman Damonte Owens. In all three NOAA Conference games, Owens got past the 20-point mark, scoring a gamehigh 24 points in a win over Muldrow, a game-high 23 points in Friday night’s home win over Stilwell and 23 points in Thursday night’s road win over Sallisaw.

However, Owens’ 23 points against the Black Diamonds wasn’t the highwater mark as that belonged to fellow teammate Mason Kemp, who scored a game-high 28 points in the victory.

Sallisaw’s Cooper Jackson scored 22 points in an NOAA Conference road win over Poteau on Feb. 4, then teammate Cooper Cox scored 21 points in Friday night’s road conference victory over Checotah.

Muldrow’s Jensi Fields scored a gamehigh 20 points in a losing effort to archrival Roland, while Muldrow’s Jesse Kilinc scored a game-high 24 points in Saturday afternoon’s road win over Central.

Central’s Josh Brunk scored 22 points in a road win over Wister on Feb. 3.

Gore’s Cain Cooper hit for 28 points in a Riverside Conference win over Keota on Feb. 4, then scored 22 points in Friday night’s home conference win over Webbers Falls.
