Vikings sweep all four games from SAU Tech

The Carl Albert State College baseball team got a pair of doubleheader sweeps last week from Southern Arkansas University Tech.

The Carl Albert State College baseball team got a pair of doubleheader sweeps last week from Southern Arkansas University Tech.

After taking both games last Thursday afternoon in East Camden, Ark., by scores of 9-6 and 10-8, the Vikings (6-1) took both games in their home openers of the season last Saturday at Mark Pollard Park at Ival Goodman Field by scores for 8-3 and 13-3.

In Thursday’s first game, broke a 1-all tie after two innings with a two-run fourth inning for a 3-1 lead. After SAU Tech cut the deficit to 4-2 after four innings, the Vikings got four runs in the fifth inning for a 7-2 lead.

For the game, Jett Frazier was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and a run batted in, while Alexander Nirider hit his first home run of the season for CASC.

Blake Lindsey (1-0) got his first win of the season, going four innings with two strikeouts. Trenton Golden got his first save of the season, going the final three innings with two Ks.

In Thursday’s nightcap, the Vikings jumped out to a 2-0 lead after an inning, which became a 3-0 advantage by the third inning and a 7-0 lead after five innings. However, the Vikings had to hold off a late SAU Tech rally to get the win.

For the game, Royce Florenzano was 2-for-3 with two runs scored, Dominic Ornelas was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored and Tucker Wooten was 2-for-3 with a double, two runs batted in and a run scored for the Vikings.

Gage Elliott (1-0) got his first win of the season, going six innings with five strikeouts. Kade Vickery pitched the seventh inning with two Ks, Ethan Waters pitched the eighth inning, followed by Seth Hubbard as he got the first two outs of the ninth inning — with one of those on a strikeout. Jaxon Spangler got the save as he struck out the final batter for the final out of the game.

In Saturday’s Game 1, the Vikings rallied from a 3-1 fourth-inning deficit with a three-run fifth inning and a four-run sixth inning to get the come-from-behind victory.

For the game, Florenzano was 3-for-4 with a double, two RBI and two runs scored, Frazier tripled, Jackson Harrell hit his first home run of the season with two RBIs and Kip Christian hit homer No. 2 of the season for CASC.

Chase Stevens (1-0) got his first win of the season in relief, going four innings with three strikeouts. Duke Walker started the game, and went the first two innings with two Ks. T.J. King got the last three outs, one of which came by strikeout.

In Saturday’s second game, the Vikings broke a 3-all tie with a run in the third inning, three runs in the fifth inning and six runs in the sixth inning.

For the game, Connor Cox was 2-for-2 with a triple and three runs scored, Rayian Torres was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI, Wooten was 2-for-2 with a double, his first homer of the season, four runs scored and two RBIs, A.J. Streater was 2-for-3 with two doubles, three RBIs and a run scored and Keypher DeLeon doubled with two RBIs and two runs scored for the Vikings.

Spangler (1-0) got his first victory of the season, going the first five innings with nine Ks. After Carter Norris pitched the sixth inning with two strikeouts, Kaden Murray pitched a scoreless seventh inning.

The Vikings will return to action with a three-game road trip starting Friday at Panola College in Carthage, Texas. The two teams will play one game at 3 p.m. Friday and end the series with a 1 p.m. Saturday doubleheader.
