CARTHAGE, Texas — The Carl Albert State College Vikings baseball team split Friday’s road doubleheader against the host Panola College Ponies, taking the opener 4-2 but losing the nightcap 12-4.

In Game 1, the Vikings (7-2) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. After the Ponies broke the ice in the second inning to cut the deficit to 3-1 after two innings, the Vikings scored a big insurance run in the third inning to make it 4-1 after three innings.

For the game, Royce Florenzano was 2-for-3 with a triple and a run scored, while Tucker Wooten was 2-for-3 with a double and two runs batted in for CASC.

Gage Elliott (2-0) got the complete-game win, going all seven innings with four strikeouts, scattering four hits and allowing two runs — one of which was unearned.

In Game 2, after falling behind the Ponies 5-0 after an inning, a threerun third inning and a single run in the fourth inning cut the CASC deficit to 5-4.

However, a four-run fourth inning and a three-run eighth inning for Panola put away the game.

In defeat, Keypher DeLeon was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI, Dominic Ornelas was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI and Connor Cox tripled and scored once for the Vikings.

Blake Lindsey (1-1) took the loss, lasting only an inning with a strikeout but gave up five runs with only two of them earned as the Vikings committed five errors in the game. Chase Stevens pitched the second inning, followed by Carter Norris going 1.1 innings with two Ks. Trenton Golden went the following 4.1 innings with two strikeouts, while Ethan Waters got the game’s final out.

Saturday’s action was rained out.

After playing a Monday road doubleheader against the Oklahoma Christian University of Science and Arts junior varsity in Edmond, the Vikings will return home to play the Connors State College Cowboys in a three-game, threeday series beginning Thursday afternoon at Mark Pollard Park at Ival Goodman Field. Game 1 will be at noon Thursday, followed by a 1 p.m. game Friday and a 1 p.m. contest Saturday.
