Webbers Falls district runners-up; Gans girls’ season ends, while Lady Rangers win big

By DAVID SEELEY SPORTS EDITOR

RED OAK — The good news for the Webbers Falls Lady Warriors is they are still alive in the Class A playoffs, but the not-so-good news is they are facing elimination the rest of the postseason.

After winning the Class A District Tournament opener 55-48 over the Cameron Yellowjackets on Friday night, the Lady Warriors were humbled by the host Red Oak Lady Eagles 80-24 in Saturday night’s district title game at Red Oak High School’s C.C. Gillespie Fieldhouse.

The Lady Warriors (13-10) will meet Afton in the Class A Regional Tournament consolation quarterfinals at 1 p.m. Thursday in Cameron, with the winner meeting the Ripley-Porter Consolidated loser in the consolation semifinals at 1 p.m. Friday in Porter. Friday’s winner will play for the consolation championship and a trip to next week’s area tournament in Cleveland, Okla., at 1 p.m. Saturday.

In the win over Cameron, the Lady Warriors trailed 3729 after three quarters but outscored the Lady ’Jackets 26-11 in the final period to get the come-from-behind win — and assure themselves another week of playoff basketball.

For the game, Webbers Falls put a trio of players into double figures, led by Bridgette Baer’s game-high 18 points, followed by Cheyanne Herrier’s 15 points and Kailey Mannon’s 12 points. Audri Spears and Bailey Ward scored four points each, while Abbie Patterson scored two points.

In the district finals loss to Red Oak, the Lady Eagles flew out to a 27-6 lead after a period and were never headed. In defeat, Baer scored 10 points to lead Webbers Falls, followed by Madison Smith with six points and Mannon, Herrier, Spears and Ward with two points apiece.

PORUM 53, GANS 27

Friday night at the Class A District Tournament in Weleetka, the Lady Grizzlies (420), whose season ended with the loss, fell behind 18-6 after a quarter and never recovered.

In defeat, K’Cee Osborn led the Lady Grizzlies with 10 points, followed by Maddie Freeman with nine points, Madi Pilkington with four points and Skylyn Bird and Sophie Pulice with two points apiece.

ROLAND 59, CHECOTAH 21

Friday night at the Ranger Dome, the Lady Rangers (17-4 overall, 10-0 in NOAA Conference play) jumped out to a 22-5 lead after a quarter and were never headed.

For the game, Ryanne Nelke scored a game-high 19 points and Julianna Trujillo added 14 points to lead Roland, followed by Molly Carver and Halle Freeman with nine points each, Haven Freeman with six points and Lilly Cole with two points.
