5 Sallisaw wrestlers qualify for Class 4A State

Vian gets 2 qualified; Gore heavyweight becomes first-ever Pirate to make state

By DAVID SEELEY SPORTS EDITOR

Five Sallisaw Black Diamonds wrestlers qualified for this weekend’s Class 4A State Tournament, which will be Friday and Saturday at Oklahoma City’s Jim Norick State Fair Arena.

At the Class 4A Regional Tournament that took place Friday and Saturday in Catoosa, Cason Craft (113 pounds) and Bodie Adams (175) were regional champions, Cole Mayfield was the regional runner-up at 157 pounds, Morgan Duke was third at 120 and Cash Mayfield was fifth at 150.

Cole Mayfield will have a chance at three-peating as a state champion, while Craft will have his shot at being a twotime state champion. Adams was a state runner-up a season ago.

At the Class 3A Regional Tournament in Blackwell, the Vian Wolverines saw two wrestlers get qualified for state as heavyweight Garritt Hunt was the regional champion, while 157-pounder Gunner Richey was fourth.

A third Wolverine, 175-pounder Tyson Murphy, placed sixth and is an alternate at that weight class. Should one of the top five state qualifiers from last weekend’s regional at 175 not be able to make it to state, Murphy will take his place.

The Gore Pirates made history as they qualified their first-ever wrestler to the Class 3A State Tournament as heavyweight Kaydin McCartney was fourth at last weekend’s Class 3A Regional Tournament in Blackwell.

Gore’s Bladin McCartney was sixth at 165 pounds, and, like Murphy, is an alternate at that weight class. The 165-pound Pirate will be a state qualifier should one of the top five qualifiers in that weight class be unable to wrestle at state — in which case, he would become the second-ever Pirate wrestler to qualify for state.

As for other Pirates, Devon Mannon (157 pounds) went 2-2, Antonio Parker (215) went 1-2 and Cole Brooksher (144) lost both of his matches.

The inaugural season of Roland High School wrestling saw three members — 132-pounder Austin Foster, 155-pounder Miguel Chavez-Trammell and 190-pounder Drew Simpson — compete at the Class 3A Regional Tournament on Friday and Saturday in Blackwell.

Unfortunately, none of them placed high enough to qualify for this weekend’s Class 3A State Tournament.
