CAGE NOTES

Then there were 8 teams left

By BY DAVID SEELEY SPORTS EDITOR

In just two weeks of high school basketball playoffs, we’ve shrunk the number of teams still alive in postseason play from 16 to eight.

When the high school basketball playoffs resume Thursday, the Sallisaw Lady Diamonds, both Muldrow teams and both Roland teams find themselves in their respective regional tournament championship semifinals — and, at this moment, each of those teams are three wins away from making the state tournament.

The Sallisaw Black Diamonds in the Class 4A Regional Tournament and both Central teams in the Class 2A Area Tournament in McAlester will be facing elimination all weekend long, from Thursday through Saturday. However, each of these teams can advance to the next stage — the area tournament for the Black Diamonds and the state tournament for the Central squads — if they win out this weekend.

Look for complete coverage of this weekend’s high school basketball playoffs in next Wednesday’s edition.

MILESTONE MARKS FOR ROLAND COACH, PLAYER

It was quite a week for Roland High School basketball.

On Feb. 17 in the Senior Night game against Sequoyah-Tahlequah at the Ranger Dome, the dramatic finish by the Runnin’ Rangers to pull out a 6057 victory enabled longtime Roland boys coach Eddie Lewis to get his 700th coaching victory.

Then, in Saturday night’s Class 3A District Tournament title game against Antlers at the Ranger Dome, Lady Ranger senior Haven Freeman eclipsed the 1,000 point mark, making her the second one to do it this season — as Central’s Cambree Bair did so last month.

Congratulations to both of you.

COLLEGE SIGNINGS

Since we’re winding down the season, just a reminder to you coaches if you are going to have any players signing letters of intent to play college basketball, give me at least a 24-hour, but preferably a 48-hour, notice so that I can plan on trying to be there for the big moment for Your TIMES.

WEEK 10 INDIVIDUAL HIGHLIGHTS

Roland freshman Damonte Owens once again made his presence felt. He hit the game-winning basket with two seconds left in regulation to break a 57all tie to defeat Sequoyah-Tahlequah on Senior Night on Feb. 17 at the Ranger Dome. Owens ended the game with a game-high 26 points.
