Vikings takes 2 of 3 from Connors State

The Carl Albert State College baseball team took two of three games from the Connors State Cowboys over a two-day, two-city series.

The Carl Albert State College baseball team took two of three games from the Connors State Cowboys over a two-day, two-city series.

On Sunday in Warner, the Vikings swept the host Cowboys by scores of 6-1 and 10-3. However, when the two teams met Monday afternoon at Mark Pollard Park at Ival Goodman Field in Poteau, it was the Cowboys who prevailed 6-3.

In Sunday’s opener, the Vikings (9-3) scored single runs in the second and fourth innings for a 2-0 lead. After the Cowboys cut the deficit to 2-1 after five innings, the Vikings put away the game with a four-run sixth inning.

For the game, Dominic Ornelas was 2-for-4 with his first home run of the season, a solo shot in the second inning, and two runs scored, Blake Vanderburg was 2-for-3 with a run scored, Brooks Herrera was 2-for-3 with a double, two runs batted in and a run scored and Royce Florenzano doubled with an RBI and a run scored for the Vikings.

Gage Elliott (3-0) got the completegame victory on the mound, going all seven innings with four strikeouts and allowing an earned run.

In Sunday’s nightcap, the Vikings jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the opening inning before the Cowboys cut their deficit to 5-2 after four innings. A threerun fifth inning for the Vikings upped the CASC advantage to 8-2. After Connors State scored once in the seventh inning, the Vikings scored twice in the eighth inning for a 10-3 lead.

For the game, Connor Cox was 4-for-5 with a double, a triple, three runs scored and two RBIs, Florenzano was 2-for-5 with two runs scored, Keypher DeLeon was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored, Vanderburg doubled, Ornelas doubled and scored once and Jett Frazier doubled with three RBIs for CASC.

Trenton Golden (2-0) got the win in relief, going the final 5.1 innings with seven Ks. Blake Lindsey went the first 3.2 innings with six strikeouts.

In Monday’s loss to Connors State, the Cowboys rallied from a 1-0 deficit after three innings with a single run in the fourth inning and a pair of two-run innings in the fifth and seventh innings for a 5-1 lead after seven innings. After the Vikings cut their deficit to 5-3 after eight innings, the Cowboys scored an insurance run in the ninth inning.

In defeat, Kip Christian was 3-for-4 with a double, while Herrera was 2-for-4 with a triple and a run scored for the Vikings.

Tanner Mullins (0-1) suffered the loss in relief, going 3.2 innings with a strikeout. Chase Stevens started and went the first three innings with a strikeout. Duke Walker went the next 1.1 innings, then the first two outs of the ninth inning were recorded by T.J. King. Jaxon Spangler got the final out of the game.

After making up last week’s postponed road doubleheader against Oklahoma Christian University of Science and Arts junior varsity on Tuesday, the Vikings will travel to meet Labette Community College in a noon Thursday twinbill in Parsons, Kan. Then Labette will travel to meet CASC in another DH beginning at noon Saturday at Mark Pollard Park at Ival Goodman Field.
