Black Diamonds rally past Vian to remain unbeaten

By DAVID SEELEY SPORTS EDITOR

The Sallisaw Black Diamonds fell behind early but rallied late to defeat the host Vian Wolverines 6-1 on Thursday evening in Vian.

The Sallisaw Black Diamonds fell behind early but rallied late to defeat the host Vian Wolverines 6-1 on Thursday evening in Vian.

Trailing 1-0 after the Wolverines (0-2) scored on a sacrifice fly by Cash Collins in the opening inning, the Black Diamonds (2-0) took the lead for good with a threerun fourth inning as Dagan Grizzle’s RBI single, Brodie Cameron’s RBI triple and Broque Oft’s sacrifice fly put Sallisaw ahead 3-1 after four innings.

An RBI double by Kase Adams and an RBI groundout by Oft upped Sallisaw’s advantage to 5-1 after six innings.

A Vian error allowed courtesy runner Chase Stephens to score Sallisaw’s sixth run in the seventh inning.

For the game, Cameron was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a run batted in, while Adams doubled with an RBI for Sallisaw.

Adams (1-0) got the win, going the first three innings with three strikeouts. Rylan Eagle pitched the next three innings with five Ks, then Grizzle finished things out in the seventh inning with a strikeout. The trio combined on a two-hitter.

In defeat, Draigton Fletcher and Michael Polecat each singled for Vian.

Polecat (0-1) took the loss, going the first 3.1 innings with two strikeouts. Manny Terrill went the next 2.2 innings with a strikeout. Jeremiah Marshall pitched the seventh inning.

Sallisaw’s road game at Stilwell was rained out Saturday with no make-up date scheduled as of press time.

The Black Diamonds were slated to play another road game Tuesday afternoon against Tulsa Metro Christian before playing Inola at 5 p.m. Thursday — which likely will be another road game for Sallisaw.
