Lady Vikings sweep ASU-Three Rivers, suffers losses to ASU-Newport

The Carl Albert State College Lady Vikings softball team swept its home doubleheader March 6 against Arkansas State University-Three Rivers, winning 6-5 in eight innings and 14-6.

The Carl Albert State College Lady Vikings softball team swept its home doubleheader March 6 against Arkansas State University-Three Rivers, winning 6-5 in eight innings and 14-6.

However, the Lady Vikings fell twice at home last Saturday to Arkansas State University-Newport by scores of 7-4 and 12-8.

In the Game 1 win over ASU-Three Rivers, Delaynie Ross stole home in the eighth inning for the win after the Lady Vikings (4-9) tied the game at 5-all with a three-run fifth inning.

For the game, Kirsten Berry was 3-for-5 with her fourth home run of the season and scored twice, while Ross was 2-for-4 with a double, a run batted in and scored the gamewinning run for the Lady Vikings.

Sophia Abbott (2-2) got the win in relief, going the final six innings with five strikeouts. Kami Autrey started and went the first two innings with two strikeouts.

In the Game 2 victory over ASU-Three Rivers, the Lady Vikings rallied from a 3-2 third-inning deficit with a fiverun third inning to take a 7-3 lead. After Three Rivers cut its deficit to 7-6 in the fourth inning, the Lady Vikings scored five runs in the fourth inning and twice in the fifth to put the game into run-rule status.

For the contest, Tynli McCarty was 3-for-3 with three runs scored, Ross was 3-for-4 with a double, a triple, three RBIs and three runs scored, Braedy Wardrope was 2-for-5 with an RBI, Kinlee Basquez was 2-for-4 with double, four RBIs and a run scored and Berry hit her fifth homer and had two RBIs for CASC.

Basquez (1-2) got her first win of the season, going the first four innings with a strikeout. Abbott pitched a scoreless fifth inning.

In the Game 1 loss to ASUNewport, the Aviators rallied from a 3-2 third-inning deficit with a two-run fifth inning and a three-run seventh inning for a 7-3 lead. The Lady Vikings scored once in the seventh inning, but their rally fell short.

In defeat, Tessa York was 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored, Ross was 2-for-4with two RBIs and a run scored and Autrey was 2-for-4 with two doubles for the Lady Vikings.

Autrey (1-3) took the loss, going five innings, then Abbott went the final two innings with three Ks.

In the Game 2 loss to ASUNewport, the Aviators once again rallied from being behind. Trailing 4-1 after three innings, ASU-Newport scored five runs in each the fourth inning and six innings, then added a run in the seventh inning for a 12-4 lead.

The Lady Vikings scored four runs in their half the seventh inning, but their rally came up short.

In defeat, York was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, Jada Wallis was 2-for-5 with a run scored, Ross was 2-for-3 with her first homer of the season, three RBIs and two runs scored and Basquez was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored.

Basquez took the loss, going the first four innings, then Abbott went the final three innings with two strikeouts.

The Lady Vikings will entertain Southern Arkansas University Tech for a 1 p.m. doubleheader this Saturday, then will meet Central Baptist College from Conway, Ark., in a 1 p.m. home Tuesday twinbill.
