Vikings sweep OCUSA JV, splits with UARM

The Carl Albert State College Vikings baseball team got a home sweep of the Oklahoma Christian University of Science and Arts junior varsity by scores of 4-2 and 6-0 on March 6 at Mark Pollard Park at Ival Goodman Field, then split their games with the University of Arkansas-Rich Mountain — winning 8-5 at home last Friday but losing 5-3 on Monday in Mena, Ark.

In the Game 1 win over the Oklahoma Christian JV, the Vikings (15-5) scored twice in the first inning and scored single runs in the second and third innings for a 4-0 lead, then held off a late rally by the visitors.

For the game, Rayian Torres was 3-for-3 with a double, a triple and a run scored, Royce Florenzano was 2-for-4 with a run batted in, Kip Christian was 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored, A.J. Streater doubled with an RBI, Dominic Ornelas doubled and scored once and Keypher DeLeon tripled with an RBI and a run scored for the Vikings.

Jett Frazier (1-0) got his first win of the season, striking out 10 batters in five innings. Tanner Mullins got his first save of the season, going the final two innings with a strikeout.

In the Game 2 victory over Oklahoma Christian JVG, Wyatt Sammons and Landon Donaho combined on a nohitter. Sammons (1-0) got his first win of the season, going the first six innings with six Ks. Donaho pitched a scoreless seventh inning with a strikeout.

The Vikings scored once in the first inning, twice in the second and fifth innings and once in the sixth inning.

For the game, Ty Wiley was 3-for-3 with a double and a run scored, Florenzano was 2-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored, Tucker Wooten was 2-for-3 with two RBIs, Blake Vanderburg was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and Jackson Harrell tripled and scored once for CASC.

In the win over Arkansas-Rich Mountain on Friday, the Vikings led 3-2 after an inning 5-2 after two innings and 8-4 after three innings.

For the game, Torres was 2-for-5 with an RBI, while Florenzano doubled and scored three runs for the Vikings.

Trenton Golden (3-0) got the win in relief, going 5.2 innings with three strikeouts. Chase Stevens got the start and went 1.1 innings with two strikeouts. Gage Elliott got his first save of the season, going the final two innings with three Ks.

In Monday’s loss to Arkansas-Rich Mountain, the Vikings fell behind 3-0 after five innings but cut their deficit to 3-1 in the seventh inning. However, the hosts scored twice in their half of the inning to take a 5-1 lead after seven innings. The Vikings scored twice in the eighth inning to cut UARM’s lead to 5-3 but got no closer.

In defeat, Wooten was 2-for-4 with a run scored, DeLeon was 2-for-3 with his first home run of the season and two RBIs for CASC.

After the Vikings played a home doubleheader Thursday afternoon against Southeast Arkansas, the same two teams will meet in another twinbill at noon Saturday in Pine Bluff, Ark.
