A great week for local jockey at Remington Park
OKLAHOMA CITY — It was a great week for jockey Edwin Escobedo, and it just got that much sweeter Sunday — as well as for trainer Joe Davis — at Remington Park.
OKLAHOMA CITY — It was a great week for jockey Edwin Escobedo, and it just got that much sweeter Sunday — as well as for trainer Joe Davis — at Remington Park.
On Saturday night, that jockey-trainer combo won the Grade 2, $56,160 Eastex Stakes together with Relentless Coronado, nearly the longest-priced horse in a short field of five. She went off at 6-1 odds, but it didn’t matter as the 4-yearold Oklahoma-bred won by a half-length.
On Sunday, Escobedo broke on top with Axle D and won as the 7-2 third wagering favorite in the 300-yard allowance race for non-winners of three lifetime races. It was the second win in a row for the 3-year-old Oklahoma-bred gelded son of Uncle D, out of the Mr Jess Perry, Transaxle. Axle D had won Jan. 17 at Louisiana Downs in Bossier City in a non-winners of two career race allowance.
Axle D finished a full length ahead of 9-5 betting favorite Mistakin Identity on Sunday afternoon, who was another head in front of third-place finisher Clareets Boy (3-1). The winner covered the distance in 15.41 seconds for a speed-index of 93 over the fast track. Axle D paid $9.40 to win, $4.20 to place and $2.80 to show.
This winner for Escobedo gave him eight winners for the meet, tied with Francisco Calderon, who won twice Sunday. They are three wins ahead of three jockeys tied for third with five victories each — Mario Delgado, Ali Rivera (two wins Sunday) and David Alvarez, Jr. The top five in the trainers’ race after two weeks of racing is two-time defending champion conditioner Dee Keener with 10 wins, followed by Marc Jungers (five wins) and three trainers tied for third — local Matt Whitekiller, Trey Wood and Cristian Alcala (four wins).
Earlier last week, Escobedo enjoyed a successful opening weekend of the 2025 Remington Park American Quarter Horse, Paint and Appaloosa Season as he was recognized with the initial Lip Chip Jockey Award of the season. Escobedo racked up five wins the previous week from 22 attempts for a 23-percent victory rate. He also qualified Ruse Ticle Knockout to the Grade 2 Oklahoma Futurity, while managing to qualify Baby Ruth to the Grade 3 Oklahoma Derby.
Remington Park racing will resume Thursday through Sunday. Saturday is Oklahoma Futurity night as the historic race leads a program with five other stakes events. Racing will begin nightly at 6 p.m. with Sunday afternoon racing at 4 p.m.
