We like to think there are some things in the world that cannot be bartered. We like to think there a lot of people that can’t be bought and can’t be changed by dangling a prize before them—no matter how wrong the deal is. But how do we calculate ourselves when the bargaining begins? Can we not gamble when everything presses us to do so?

Can we stand up for what we believe, refuse to accept something simply because it is supposed to be a good deal?
Before we become too rash in our judgments, we can remember that sometimes the highest bidder is simply a hint. George Washington once commented that few men have the virtue to withstand the highest bidder. Are we strong enough to avoid a hint?
