Central Tiger Shootout baseball tournament, RC Tournaments slated this week

By BY DAVID SEELEY SPORTS EDITOR

It’s another week highlighted by tournaments.

It’s another week highlighted by tournaments.

The Central Tiger Shootout baseball tournament will be Thursday through Saturday, featuring the host Tigers, Muldrow, Roland and Vian.

Both Riverside Conference Tournaments will be this week. The baseball version will have the games taking place Thursday in Gore and the other half in Porum. The tournament will end on Friday with the three trophy games — consolation title game, thirdplace game and championship game — happening in Gore.

The Riverside Conference Slow-Pitch Tournament will be a one-day event on Friday in Stigler.

All three of these brackets/schedules can be found in today’s edition.

CONGRATULATIONS, JONAH

Muldrow Bulldogs senior pitcher Jonah Claborn surpassed the 150-strikeout mark for his prep career as he struck out nine batters in a six-inning home District 4A-8 loss to Broken Bow in the nightcap on March 31.

ROLAND RANGERS ERASE ZERO FROM WIN COLUMN

I’m not fooling around when I mention that the Roland Rangers got their first win of the 2025 baseball season and first District 3A-8 victory on April 1, otherwise known as April Fool’s Day, when they routed Heavener 13-6 in nine innings just 24 hours after the Wolves did the same to them, winning 14-3 in five innings on March 31 in Roland.

Now, the only team left still seeking win No. 1 for the season is the Gans Grizzlies.

PLAYOFFS RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER

It’s almost a hand-in-hand thing. When it’s the week for the Central Tiger Shootout and the Riverside Conference Baseball Tournament, the postseason cannot be too far away.

Either at the end of this week or sometime next week, the Class A baseball and the slow-pitch districttournament assignments will be announced by the Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activity Association (OSSAA).

As soon as they are announced, the latest edition published will have all the information.

WEEK 5 HITTING HIGHLIGHTS BASEBALL

The ball was flying out of the Sallisaw Black Diamonds’ home baseball field on April 1 when they hit a total of three home runs in their District 4A-8 home rout of Poteau. Brodie Cameron hit a three-run home run to highlight a sixrun third inning, then Rylan Eagle and Dagan Grizzle hit back-to-back solo homers to lead off the fifth inning to put the game into run-rule status for a walk-off victory. In two district games against Poteau, Grizzle had four hits including a double and his third homer of the season, while Cameron had four hits including a double and his third round-tripper.

The Vian Wolverines also had a three-run homer contest on April 1 against Central as Draighton Fletcher hit homer No. 3, Drake Collins his first homer and Cash Collins his first homer as they defeated the host Tigers.

Roland’s Alex Brant had quite an April Fool’s Day outing as he went 6-for-6 in the Rangers’ nine-inning, District 3A-8 road win over Heavener to get rid of the zero under the win column. All total, Brant had seven hits in the two-game district series against the Wolves.

In the same Roland road district game against Heavener, Colton Peters batted 1.000 as he was 3-for-3.

The duo of Clayton Roberts and Brutus Robinson packed a mighty punch last week, albeit in only two games — one each against Weleetka on March 31 and Braggs on April 1. Roberts went 5-for-8 (.625 batting average), while Robinson was 4-for-9 (.444) as the Warriors lost to the Outlaws on March 31 but outlasted the Wildcats on April Fool’s Day.

SOFTBALL

Gore Lady Pirate River Shoemake was 5-for-8 (.625) in two games last week, including hitting her first homer run of the season on April 1 in a home win over Arkansas River rival Webbers Falls.

Central’s Ayrland Jiles hit homer No. 2, which was an inside-the-park shot in a home rout of McCurtain on March 31, while in that same game Camryn Gilliam hit her first homer of the season — a two-run, inside-the-park home run.

Vian’s Kala Gibbins was perfect at the plate, despite her team losing both games, as she was 4-for-4 against Stilwell on March 31, while going 2-for-2 in a road loss April 1 in Howe. In those same two games, Gibbins’ teammate Rayleigh Terrill was 4-for-6 (.667) with her first homer of the season.

Muldrow’s Kaydence Young got her first homer of the season in a loss to Warner on March 31 in the Fort Gibson Tournament.

In a doubleheader sweep at the hands of the Leflore Lady Savages on March 31, Webbers Falls Lady Warrior Bentley Ward was 4-for-5 (.800) on the day, including a triple.

WEEK 5 PITCHING HIGHLIGHTS BASEBALL

Vian’s Riley Ellis threw a three-inning, no-hitter on April 1 against Central.
