Sallisaw splits district openers with VC, entertain Tulsa McLain for Senior Night on Friday

By DAVID SEELEY SPORTS EDITOR

The Sallisaw High School soccer teams split their District 4A-4 openers against the Tulsa Victory Christian squads Thursday evening at Perry F. Lattimore Stadium.

The Black Diamonds capped the night with a 3-2 victory over the Conquerors, but the Lady Conquerors got the evening started with a 2-1 win over the Lady Diamonds, who got a March 28 road win at Keys by the score of 2-1.

In the boys’ match, the Conquerors (4-3 overall, 0-1 in district play) broke the scoreless deadlock on a goal with 34:49 left in the first half, but the Black Diamonds (7-0, 1-0) got the match tied on Wes Rodriguez’ penalty kick with 3:59 remaining before halftime to knot the match at 1-all at halftime.

The Black Diamonds, and more specifically Rodriguez, outscored the Conquerors 2-1 in the second half as both Sallisaw goals came from Rodriguez.

Josh Taylor had three saves in the match.

In the girls’ match against Victory Christian, Bella Morales tied the match at 1-all for the Lady Diamonds (5-2, 0-1) with 29:30 left in the match after the Lady Conquerors (3-4, 1-0) took a 1-0 lead in the opening half.

The Lady Conquerors scored the game-winning goal with 3:58 remaining in the game.

Jocelyn Rivera made five saves on the evening.

In the March 28 road win over Keys, Alayna Donaldson and Emilie Robbins each scored a goal.

Both Rivera and Promise Flute made two saves in the contest.

The Lady Diamonds and Black Diamonds traveled Tuesday evening for road district matches, the girls against Tulsa Metro Christian and the boys against Tulsa Cascia Hall. Then, both Sallisaw teams will be home for Senior Night district matches against Tulsa McLain on Friday, with the girls’ match at 5 p.m. and the boys’ contest at 7 p.m.
