‘Pawsitive’ Festival a tail-wagging success

By Amie Cato-Remer Editor

There were wagging tails, happy barks, and plenty of smiles at the Pocket Park last Saturday, as more than 250 attendees gathered for Sallisaw Main Street’s Pawsitive Pets Festival—an event dedicated to celebrating furry companions and the people who love them.

There were wagging tails, happy barks, and plenty of smiles at the Pocket Park last Saturday, as more than 250 attendees gathered for Sallisaw Main Street’s Pawsitive Pets Festival—an event dedicated to celebrating furry companions and the people who love them.

From pet pageants to agility courses, the day was filled with excitement, laughter, and a deep sense of community. Sallisaw Main Street President Lance Montgomery praised the turnout, calling the event “a huge success.”

“Thanks to this incredible community, we had over 250 attendees, countless wagging tails, and plenty of smiles all around,” Montgomery said. “Together, we provided over 90 free pet vaccinations, 26 microchips, had 20 dogs participate in training sessions and the agility course, and celebrated five adoptions—which means five deserving pets found their forever homes.”

A major highlight of the event was the Pawsitive Pets Pageant, where local pets competed for titles in four fun categories. This year’s winners were:

• Most Talented: Naveah, who wowed the crowd with show-stealing skills and undeniable charm.

• Best Behaved: Weenie, whose sweet nature and perfect manners earned top marks.

• Best Dressed: Maleah Lynn, who dazzled with her standout style and flair.

• Best of Show: Akila, who captured hearts and excelled in every category.

Montgomery also gave a heartfelt thank you to the event’s community partners and vendors, who helped bring the day to life.

Among the supporters:

• Black Diamond Canine Assisted Learning and Scott Mayfield of Rising Star Farms, who led energetic and informative training sessions.

• Herbaria Highlands, who delighted guests with their charming petting exhibit.

• Paula Haraway and Sequoyah Animal Advocates, Inc., who provided free vaccinations and fun prizes for pageant winners.

• Sallisaw Animal Care Facility, for offering free microchipping services.

• Sallisaw Animal Hospital, for sharing pet care items, tips, and resources.

• Main Street’s Pink Pig food truck, which kept everyone well-fed with Indian tacos and funnel cakes.

“We had so many amazing pets strut their stuff at the festival,” Montgomery added. “A big round of applause to all the wonderful contestants who made us smile, laugh, and cheer.”

Montgomery also extended gratitude to the event judges—Madeline Lessley, Rosario Montgomery, and Sallisaw City Manager Brian Heverly—for their time and enthusiasm.

“We loved seeing your pets shine, and we can’t wait to do it all again next time,” Montgomery said. “To every pet owner, volunteer, family, and friend who showed up—thank you! Your support made a real difference, and we are so proud to be part of a community that loves and cares for its animals.”

As for a final message to the public? “Give your pets some extra love today,” Montgomery said.
