Slow-pitch softball, Class A baseball district assignments announced by OSSAA

By BY DAVID SEELEY SPORTS EDITOR

It’s hard to believe it, but the postseason for our local high school slow-pitch softball teams and Class A baseball teams is just around the corner.

It’s hard to believe it, but the postseason for our local high school slow-pitch softball teams and Class A baseball teams is just around the corner.

On Friday, the Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association (OSSAA) announced all the district assignments for these teams.

In softball, the Muldrow Lady Bulldogs were sent with Locust Grove to Sequoyah-Tahlequah for a Class 5A District Tournament.

In Class 4A slow-pitch softball, the Vian Lady Wolverines were sent with Arkoma (which this spring is co-oping with Cameron due to the Lady Yellowjackets not having enough players for a team of their own) to Pocola for a district tournament.

The Central Lady Tigers and the Gore Lady Pirates were sent to Wister for a Class 3A District Tournament.

In Class 2A, the Gans Lady Grizzlies were sent to Rattan, while the Webbers Falls Lady Warriors, along with the Quinton Lady Savages, were sent to Rock Creek High School, which is a consolidation of Bokchito and Blue high schools east of Durant — with softball games happening in Blue, which is the first town east of Durant on U.S. 70.

I was not aware of this in Class A baseball, but the OSSAA is treating it as it did Class A football — splitting the class into two divisions.

In Class A, Division I, the Gore Pirates are one of 17 teams who are getting a bye into the regional tournaments, which will be May 1-3.

In Class A, Division II, 18 teams were given byes into the regional tournaments, but the Gans Grizzlies and the Webbers Falls Warriors were not among those.

However, the Warriors got good news as they will welcome the Cave Springs Hornets to Eual Carter Sports Complex for one Class A-II District Tournament.

The Grizzlies, however, were sent to Keota for another Class A-II District Tournament.

All the slow-pitch softball district tournaments and the Class A-II District Tournaments for the Warriors and the Grizzlies will be April 24-26.

WEEK 6 PITCHING HIGHLIGHTS BASEBALL

Vian’s Riley Ellis had a nine-strikeout performance as he three-hit Warner to help the Wolverines win the Central Tiger Shootout title game Saturday night.

Ellis’ teammate, Kaden Fulbright, no-hit Westville in Thursday’s Central Tiger Shootout opening-round win.

Roland’s Hunter Burris got his first win of the season, a five-hitter with nine Ks in the Rangers’ Central Tigers Shootout opening-round win over Stilwell on Thursday afternoon.

Central’s Kiefer Bailey struck out six in a four-inning relief outing in the Tigers’ consolation-semifinal victory over Stilwell in the Central Tigers Shootout.

Gore’s James Brasuell fanned seven batters in a five-inning relief stint in the title game of the Riverside Conference Tournament on Friday afternoon in Gore.

Brasuell’s teammate, Eli Munson, no-hit the Gans Grizzlies the day before in the opening round of the RCT. He fanned six hitters.

The Webbers Falls combination of Luke Pierce and Elliott Kunkel no-hit Cave Springs on April 8 in Braggs. Pierce got the win and had four strikeouts in the first two innings, while Kunkel struck out the side in the third and final inning of the run-rule victory.

SOFTBALL

Muldrow’s Jaydin Dean three-hit the Gore Lady Pirates on April 7.

WEEK 6 HITTING HIGHLIGHTS BASEBALL

Roland’s Alex Brant had seven hits in last weekend’s Central Tigers Shootout, and eight all total for the week.

Central’s Ryker Miller hit his first home run of the season, which proved to be the game-winning hit in the Tigers’ road win over Webbers Falls on March 7 at Eual Carter Sports Complex.

Gore’s Kyler McGee had the walk-off RBI single in the seventh inning to help the Pirates defeat the Porum Panthers to win the Riverside Conference Tournament on Friday afternoon in Gore.

McGee’s teammate, Duane Hunt, hit his first homer of the season, a grand slam shot in the Riverside Conference Tournament opening-round win over Gans on Thursday in Gore.

A third Gore Pirate, James Brasuell, hit his first homer of the season in the Riverside Conference Tournament title game against Porum. All total for last week, he had eight hits.

A fourth Gore Pirates went yard as Gage Dame also hit his first round-tripper this season, going in Riverside Conference Tournament opening-round win over the Grizzlies.

Webbers Falls Warrior Elliott Kunkel hit his second homer of the season in a losing cause in the Riverside Conference Tournament consolation finals against Okay.

SOFTBALL

Muldrow’s Danica Tune hit her first home run of the season in Thursday’s loss to Oktaha in the Checotah Festival.

Muldrow’s Amaya Duran hit three home runs last week, one in the Lady Bulldogs’ April 7 win over Gore and the other two coming in a road win over Vian the following day.

Speaking of Muldrow’s game at Vian on April 8, Vian’s Rayleigh Terrill hit her third homer of the season.

Central’s Ayrland Jiles, a Arkansas-Monticello signee, got four hits last week, but one of those was her third homer of the season.

Two Gore Lady Pirates hit home runs last week. Sophie O’Connor hit two homers in last week’s non-Riverside Conference Tournament win over Gans on April 8, while Kennedy Williams hit her second homer in the tournament win over Okay.

Webbers Falls Lady Warrior Bridgett Baer hit a two-run, inside-the-park home run in a road loss at McCurtain on April 7.
