Vian wins Central Tiger Shootout; Muldrow finish 3rd

By DAVID SEELEY SPORTS EDITOR

The Vian Wolverines went through undefeated to win the Central Tiger Shootout on Saturday evening at Central High School.

The Vian Wolverines went through undefeated to win the Central Tiger Shootout on Saturday evening at Central High School.

The Wolverines got a fiveinning, run-rule victory over the Warner Eagles in the title game after Vian opened with a 17-0 four-inning rout of Westville in Thursday’s opening-round game and got a 9-6 victory over Muldrow in Friday afternoon’s championship semifinals.

The Bulldogs finished third after beating their archrivals, the Roland Rangers, 10-2 in five innings in Saturday afternoon’s third-place game. The ’Dogs opened the tournament Thursday afternoon with a 1312 loss to the Checotah junior varsity, which was taking the place of the Keys Cougars who could not play in the tournament due to having to make up their District 3A-7 game against the Sequoyah-Tahlequah Indians on Thursday. However, since the Wildcats could not come back on Saturday due to the school’s prom, they went into the consolation bracket and the Bulldogs slid into the championship semifinals.

The Rangers were fourth. The Rangers defeated Stilwell 3-1 in Thursday’s opening-round game before losing 6-5 in nine innings to Warner.

The host Tigers ended up taking home the consolation plaque. After losing its tournament opener 8-3 to Warner on Thursday, they defeated Stilwell 4-3 in the consolation championship semifinals. Due to the Checotah JV not being able to play on Saturday and the Poteau Pirates needing to get a game in after losing one to the previous week’s rain showers, the Tigers obliged by allowing the Pirates to play them in what would have been a consolation championship game that turned into just a regular-season game not related to the tournament. The Pirates won 15-6 in five innings.
