Eastern Oklahoma has a really cool opportunity coming up this summer to love on kids with disabilities and their families by having a day for them to enjoy some fishing, food and fellowship, with gifts to boot.

Coming up on June 7, we will be having a Catch a Special Thrill (C.A.S.T.) for Kids fishing event happening at Honors Heights Park in Muskogee. If you haven’t heard of C.A.S.T. For Kids, it is a national group that puts on fishing events all over the country for children with special needs, ages 6-18.

“This will be the first C.A.S.T. affair in Muskogee, and we are wanting to make sure those in our surrounding area get an opportunity to participate, if they are interested.” said Brian Lanham, the local C.A.S.T. volunteer event coordinator.

“No strings attached. It is all free, and the kids get one-on-one volunteers. There will be lots of free fishing gear, T-shirt, hat, lunch and an awards ceremony where all will get a plaque.”

C.A.S.T. is on track to have 100 fishing events nationwide in 2025.

Anyone with a heart to serve children with special needs is invited to volunteer. Fishing experience is not required. On average, volunteers serve six hours the day of the event. Shore Volunteers are needed to assist with setup and organization, registration and sign-in process, photo process, fishing with children, preparing for and serving lunch, celebrating the children, clean up and more.

Registration to participate in the event or to volunteer is required. Space is limited.

If you need any further information, check out https://castforkids.org/ and https://castforkids.org/event/ honorheightslake/.

For additional information, e-mail honorheightslake@castforkids.org or call Lanham at (918) 781-2880.

The C.A.S.T. for Kids Foundation enriches the lives of children with special needs, supports their families and strengthens communities through the sport of fishing. We empower families and communities to celebrate children with special needs, making these children feel valued and loved.

Kudos to all those who shared a part in bringing this wonderful opportunity to Muskogee.
