Black Diamonds outlast Hilldale; Warriors win district tournament

MUSKOGEE — The Sallisaw Black Diamonds avenged Monday’s home District 4A-8 loss to Hilldale as they outlasted the Hornets 15-13 Tuesday evening.

The Black Diamonds (19-4 overall, 10-2 in district play) trailed the Hornets (23-3, 11-1) 8-6 after three innings but took the lead for good with a single run in the fourth inning and eight runs in the fifth inning for a 15-8 lead. The Hornets made things interesting with a single run in the fifth inning and four runs in the sixth inning, but they got no closer.

For the game, Dagan Grizzle was 2-for-4 with his fifth and sixth home runs of the season and seven runs batted in, Luke Pack was 2-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBIs, Creed Nelson was 2-for-4 with two runs scored, Easton Wolfe was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored, Broque Oft was 2-for-5 with a run score and Kase Adams doubled with two runs scored and an RBI for Sallisaw.

Rylan Eagle (2-0) got the win in relief, going three innings with two strikeouts. Grizzle got his first save of the season, going the final two innings with two strikeouts. Brodie Cameron got the start and went the first two innings with two Ks.

Tuesday afternoon in the Class A-II District Tournament at Eual Carter Sports Complex, the Warriors (12-14-1) swept the Hornets (0-5) to claim the district championship and qualify for next week’s regional tournament, which will be at a site and time announced this weekend or early next week by the Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association (OSSAA).

In the opener, Brutus Robinson (3-3) threw a one-hitter with eight strikeouts.

The Warriors got Robinson all the run support needed with a three-run first inning. A nine-run second inning put the game into run-rule status.

For the contest, Ryan Cowan was 2-for-2 with two runs batted in and two runs scored, Luke Pierce doubled with two runs scored and an RBI and Gunner Shelby tripled with two runs scored and an RBI for Webbers Falls.

In the district-clinching win, the Warriors jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning, which became a 9-1 advantage after two innings and an 18-1 lead after a nine-run third inning to put the game into run-rule status.

For the contest, Robinson was 2-for-2 with three runs scored and two RBIs, Pierce was 2-for-4 with a double, three RBIs and two runs scored, Trysten Wilbourn was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and an RBI, Hayden Stephens was 2-for-3 with five RBIs and three runs scored, Clayton Roberts was 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI and a run scored and Shelby doubled with three runs scored and two RBIs for Webbers Falls.

After Ryan Cowan got the first out by strikeout, Robinson went the rest of the way to get the win as he fanned five batters in three innings.

VIAN 7, HARTSHORNE 1

Tuesday afternoon in Hartshorne, the Wolverines (25-5) won their 17th straight game.

After falling behind 1-0 after an inning, the Wolverines tied the game with a run in the fourth inning and capped the come-from-behind victory with a six-run sixth inning.

For the game, Cash Collins was 2-for-3 with two doubles and a run scored, Jeremiah Marshall doubled with two runs batted in and a run scored, Stryker Fields doubled with an RBI and Riley Ellis hit his fourth home run of the season with four RBIs for Vian.

Manny Terrill (5-0) got the complete-game win, getting six strikeouts in seven innings and throwing a three-hitter.

KEOTA 8, GANS 0, 5 INN. KEOTA 15, GANS 1, 3 INN.

Wednesday in the Class A-II District Tournament in Keota, the Lions (11-9-1) swept the Grizzlies (0-12) to win the district title and end the baseball season for Gans.

In the opener, Keota pitcher Kalib West threw a no-hitter against Gans with 10 strikeouts in five innings.

Jarrett Frazier-Barter took the loss, going the first three innings with seven strikeouts. Phoenix Xiong got the final three outs.

In the nightcap, after the Grizzlies cut their deficit to 2-1 in the second inning, the Lions roared back in their half of the frame with 13 runs to take a 15-1 lead to put the game into run-rule status.

In defeat, Anthony Vasquez’s RBI single in the second inning was the lone hit for Gans off Keota pitcher Kaden Decker.

Frazier-Barter suffered the loss, going just the first inning. After Xiong got the next two outs, Jasper Green got the last out. Of Keota’s 15 runs, only four were earned as the other 11 were unearned due to the Grizzlies committing eight errors.

POCOLA 4, MULDROW 0, 6 INN.

Tuesday afternoon in Muldrow, the Bulldogs (5-21) suffered a pair home losses to the Indians (12-13).

In the opener, the Indians broke a scoreless tie after the five innings of regulation baseball with a four-run sixth inning.

In defeat, Jace Prewett was 2-for-3, Jackson Phillips doubled and Trey Turpin tripled for the ’Dogs.

Jonah Claborn (2-6) was the hardluck loser, getting 12 strikeouts in six innings, but only allowing an earned run as the other three Pocola runs were unearned due to a sixth-inning error.

In the nightcap, the Indians took the early lead at 4-0 in the first inning. After the Bulldogs scored once in their half of the frame to cut the deficit to 4-1 after an inning, the Indians put the game away with two runs in the second inning, a run in the third inning and four runs in the fifth inning.

In defeat, Wyatt Prewett doubled and Chris Phelps singled for Muldrow’s two hits off Pocola pitcher Logan Dunnigan, who struck out four batters in five innings.

BEGGS 5, ROLAND 3

Tuesday afternoon in Beggs, the Golden Demons (17-8 overall, 8-3 in District 3A-8 play) took a pair of district games from the Rangers (3-17, 1-11).

In the opener, the Golden Demons, who fell behind 2-0 in the second inning, scored three runs in the second inning and twice in the third inning for a 5-2 lead. The Rangers scored once in the fifth inning to make it 5-3 but got no closer.

In defeat, Colton Peters was 2-for-3 with a double, while Alex Brant, Raesean Perryman and Rickey Watts all singled for Roland.

Brant (1-2) suffered the loss, despite fanning eight batters in six innings and throwing a fourhitter.

In the nightcap, Beggs’ pitching duo of Jerrett Hammer and Jaxon Remington combined to four-hit the Rangers.

The Golden Demons scored once in the first inning, three runs in the third inning, twice in the fourth inning and once in the seventh inning.

In defeat, Peters doubled, while Brant, Perryman and Avery Moya all singled for Roland.

Peters (1-4) took the loss, despite recording eight strikeouts in four innings. Moya went the final three innings with two strikeouts.

EDITOR’S NOTE: Gore’s road game Tuesday at Quinton was canceled. The Pirates played a road game Thursday afternoon in Weleetka, followed by a 4:30 p.m. Monday game at Preston.
