A tragic two-vehicle collision that occurred Wednesday night has claimed the life of a Sallisaw Middle School student, leaving the community grieving and authorities searching for answers.

The accident occurred at the intersection of Iola and Walnut Streets and involved a church van and an SUV, according to a statement issued Thursday morning by Sallisaw Police Chief Terry Franklin.

“The accident involved a church van and an SUV. Tragically, one juvenile passenger was pronounced dead at the scene,” Chief Franklin confirmed. Police has not yet released the name of the victim pending notification of family members, but other informed sources reveal that the victim was Baylee Rayann Coachman, 11.

The driver of the SUV, whose identity is also being withheld, remains in critical condition and is currently receiving medical treatment, according to Franklin.

“As of now, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol and the Sallisaw Police Department are working diligently to determine the cause of the accident,” Franklin said. “We ask for patience and privacy for the families involved as we complete this process.”

In response to the incident, Sallisaw Public Schools Superintendent Steve Barrett issued a heartfelt statement expressing the district’s sorrow and commitment to support.

“Sallisaw Public Schools is saddened to report the recent passing of a student at Sallisaw Middle School,” Barrett said. “We extend our sincere condolences to the student’s family, friends and all those affected by this loss.

“Our counselors and support staff are available to assist students and staff in need of emotional support during this difficult time. Out of respect for the family’s privacy, we will not be sharing further details. We ask that the community join us in respecting their wishes.”

Chief Franklin concluded his statement by sharing his department’s sympathy.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the victim’s family during this difficult time,” he said. “We will update information as the investigation continues.”
