The night ended with the Black Diamonds blanking the Bulldogs 4-0, but the Lady Bulldogs took the opener 5-0 over the Lady Diamonds.
In the boys’ match, four different players scored for the Black Diamonds (10-2 overall, 5-2 in district play).
Cesar Morales hit a successful penalty kick for a 1-0 lead for Sallisaw. The other goals were scored by Brecken Hennessee, Phillip Hennessee and Wyatt Allen, all from an assist by Wes Rodriguez.
Josh Taylor made 10 saves in goal for the Black Diamonds. In the girls’ match, Jocelyn Rivera made 12 saves for the Lady Diamonds (5-7, 1-6). The Black Diamonds did do something that has not been done in the four-year history of the program — make the Class 4A playoffs.
Although it was not official at press time, Sallisaw coach Sinue Rodriguez was pretty positive that the Black Diamonds will hit the road to meet the Skiatook Bulldogs on Monday night in the opening round of the Class 4A playoffs.
