TAMPA, Fla. — The Tulsa Golden Hurricane women’s softball team saw its season end on Wednesday with a 5-2 loss to Wichita State in the American Athletic Conference Tournament at the University of South Florida Softball Stadium. TU beat Texas-San Antonio 1-0 in the AAU Tournament opener on Tuesday.
In the win over UTSA, Brinly Maples threw a complete-game shutout. Maples (6-7) allowed just six hits in her seven innings of work. The junior hurler walked three and struck out four.
Faith Russell drove home the winning run in the fourth inning. She worked a bases loaded full count and then took a pitch low for ball four, bringing home Whitney Holcomb from third.
In the season-ending loss to Wichita State, Camryn Compton’s three-run home run in the sixth inning proved to be the difference.
The Golden Hurricane (21-33) scored runs in the opening two innings, including a home run from freshman Aliya Scarborough, her second of the season. Wichita State scored runs in the third and fourth innings to even the game at 2-all, setting the stage for Compton’s game-winning, three-run blast.
Maura Moore (13-16) took the loss but was as sharp as ever in the complete-game effort. She was tagged for five runs but allowed just four hits and no walks with no strikeouts.
Joining Scarborough with extra-base hits were Maci Cole and Paige Knight with a double each, and left fielder Holcomb collected two doubles.
