Keeping your pets safe this Fourth of July

By ALLY TROTTER TIMES INTERN

As Independence Day approaches, many pet owners worry about how fireworks and Fourth of July celebrations will affect their furry friends. Alice Messer, owner and operator of Abby’s Angels Grooming and Boarding Salon in Vian, shares beneficial tips to help keep your pets safe and calm during the holidays.

Alice’s top suggestions:

• Protect their ears. Place cotton balls gently in your pet’s ears to muffle loud sounds. You can loosely tie a towel around their head to help keep the cotton balls in place. You want to make sure that they are still able to breathe. Use Benadryl. Giving your pet Benadryl may also help calm them, but be sure to read labeling for proper dosage and confirm it’s safe for your specific animal.

• Create a safe area. Place your pet in their kennel or crate and cover it with a blanket or towel to reduce noise and flashing lights. If your pet is not crate trained, you can place them in an enclosed room or a large closet far from windows and exterior walls. Close windows, close curtains and turn off the lights to create a calm area.

• Minimize exposure to light. Some pets may be sensitive to flashing lights, which can trigger seizures. Reducing your pet’s exposure to light helps keep them relaxed and safe.

• Use calming aids. Consider purchasing calming chews or a calming vest/jacket to reduce anxiety.
If you have questions about your pet’s safety or need more personalized advice, don’t hesitate to reach out to your local veterinarian or groomer.
