Lady Diamonds lose district home games to Eufaula, Stigler

By DAVID SEELEY SPORTS EDITOR

It was a rough two-day period for the Sallisaw Lady Diamonds as they lost back-to-back home District 4A-6 games.

After being blanked 10-0 in five innings by the Stigler Lady Panthers on Tuesday evening, the Lady Diamonds suffered 17-7, six-inning, run-rule loss to the Eufaula Lady Ironheads.

In the loss to Eufaula, the Lady Diamonds (6-12 overall, 3-7 in district play) took a 2-1 lead in the first inning on back-to-back RBI singles by Jaycie Cox and Brinley Mills. However, that would be their only lead of the afternoon.

The Lady Ironheads (10-10, 3-4) scored twice in the second inning and seven runs in the third inning to take a 10-2 lead.

JoLee Curson’s RBI single in the third inning cut the Sallisaw deficit to 10-3 after three innings, only to see Eufaula score once in the fifth inning to make it 11-3.

It took only two swings of the bat for the Lady Diamonds to cut into the Eufaula lead as back-to-back solo home runs to lead off the fifth inning. Sydney Weedon’s fourth home run of the season and Channing Wilson’s second homer cut the Sallisaw deficit to 11-5 after five innings.

However, the Lady Ironheads put the game into run- rule status with a six-run sixth inning.

In defeat, Wilson was 3-for-4 with a double, her second homer, four runs batted in and two runs scored, Cox was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI and Weedon homered for Sallisaw, who saw eight batters strikeout at the hands of Eufaula starting pitcher Leah Green.

Delaney Compton (5-8) took the loss, despite fanning three batters.

In the loss to Stigler, Stigler pitcher Lexi Kates struck out eight batters and threw a two-hitter.

The Lady Panthers (8-7, 2-3) scored twice in each of the first two innings, then put the game into run-rule status with a pair of three-run innings in the fourth and fifth innings.

In defeat, Cox and Natalie Gonzalez each were 1-for-2 for Sallisaw, which had only three baserunners get as far as second base.

Compton suffered the loss, despite striking out five Stigler batters.
