Lady Diamonds come up short against Broken Bow

By DAVID SEELEY SPORTS EDITOR

The Sallisaw Lady Diamonds would not go away, but in the end they came up short in an 8-5 home District 4A-6 loss to the Broken Bow Lady Savages on Monday evening at Sallisaw High School’s “Turf of Dreams.”

The game was scoreless until a steal of home by Broken Bow’s Kirra Wilkins put the Lady Savages (168 overall, 9-0 in district play) ahead 1-0 after three innings.

A sacrifice fly by Wilkins and a wild pitch increased Broken Bow’s advantage to 3-0 in the fourth inning.

The Lady Diamonds (6-13, 3-8) cracked the scoreboard in the fourth inning as Channing Wilson, who led off the inning with a double, scored on a wild pitch to cut the Sallisaw deficit to 3-1 after four innings.

The Lady Savages scored three runs in the fifth inning on RBI singles by Tyson Woolsey and Jaden Harden, along with an RBI double by Wilkins, to put Broken Bow ahead 6-1, then a two-out, RBI single by Kash Goss upped the visitor’s advantage to 7-1 in the sixth inning.

The Lady Diamonds responded with a three-run sixth inning as a wild pitch and a two-run double by Delaney Compton cut the Broken Bow lead to 7-4 after six innings.

A two-out RBI double by Jaylen Cauthron got a big insurance run in the seventh inning for the Lady Savages to put them ahead 8-4.

The Lady Diamonds tried to mount a rally in their half of the seventh inning as Sydney Weedon hit a oneout solo home run, her sixth homer of the season, to cut the Sallisaw deficit to 8-5. After a walk to Wilson, Woolsey, Broken Bow’s pitcher, retired the next two batters to end the game.

Woolsey threw a five-hitter with eight strikeouts.

In defeat, Weedon hit her sixth homer, Wilson doubled and scored twice, Compton hit a two-RBI double and Brinley Mills and JoLee Curson each singled for Sallisaw.

Compton (5-9) took the loss as she went four innings with two strikeouts. Curson went the final three innings with a strikeout.
