Bulldogs entertain Eufaula in District 3A-3 opener

By DAVID SEELEY SPORTS EDITOR

The Muldrow Bulldogs could not be sitting any better than where they are as they begin District 3A-3 play tonight when they entertain the Eufaula Ironheads at 7 p.m. at Marty Rogers Field.

“We’re where we expected to be,” said Muldrow coach Logan Coatney, whose team is 3-0 and has outscored the opposition 160-46 — including last Friday night’s homecoming 52-6 victory over the Spiro Bulldogs. “Obviously, we’ve had some mistakes, and we’ve fallen short in some areas that we’ve had to fix. I’m really excited where we are currently heading into district play. Like we’ve talked to our kids, these first three games for us is all about getting things fixed and preparing ourselves to be in a position to make a run within our district. When you look at it, at the end of the day, the district games are all that really matter. I’m proud of the kids and the position we’ve put ourselves in. Now is when it all starts. We’re doing things the right way and executing on both sides of the ball.”

The Ironheads (0-3) are seeking their first win of 2025 after losing 57-19 last Friday night to the Sallisaw Black Diamonds in a game in which they led 6-0 before ultimately being worn down due to lack of depth.

However, Coatney said that the Ironheads are a good team and will cause problems for the ’Dogs.

“Eufaula is a good football team,” he said. “Their record may show a different story than looking in from the outside. They’ve played three tough non-district ball games. They opened up with Vian, then followed that up with Tahlequah-Sequoyah and Sallisaw. I’m telling you right now — they’re a tough football team. (Eufaula) Coach (Larry) Newton has always done an outstanding job. They’re going to be ready to play. Their record does not indicate how well a coached team that is. They have really good size. It always seems like they have a really big offensive and defensive lines. They’re real strong up front. They have some size in their skill players — the receivers, the tight end, linebackers and defensive backs. Their athleticism and their size is second to none.”

The key to staying undefeated and starting district play at 1-0 for the Bulldogs is to play sound in all phases of the game.

“We’re really going to have to come out and execute on both sides of the ball,” Coatney said. “We have to stay true to the game plan. Hopefully, we’ll come out with a victory at home.”

Even better news for the ’Dogs is that they are healthy coming into tonight’s District 3A-3 opener.

“I’m excited to say that (we’re healthy),” Coatney said. “We had an injury the week prior, but our kids are healthy. We had kids come in on Saturday and icing some of the bruises they had. Other than that, we’re healthy, and we’re excited being where we are going into district play.”
