Local softball teams see seasons end in regional tournaments

By DAVID SEELEY SPORTS EDITOR

GLENPOOL — The Sallisaw Lady Diamonds lost both of their games in the Class 4A Regional Tournament on Thursday to see their season come to a close.

The Lady Diamonds fell 14-2 in five innings to the Verdigris Lady Cardinals, then lost 11-7 to the Cleveland Lady Tigers to end their playoff run.

The Lady Diamonds finished the season at 6-18.

In the loss to Verdigris, after a bases-loaded walk to Brinley Mills scored Natalie Gonzalez to make it 1-0 in the first inning, the Lady Cardinals scored seven runs in both the first and second innings for a 14-1 lead after two innings.

Jaycie Cox’s one-out, RBI double in the fifth inning scored Gonzalez to cut the deficit to 14-2, but it was not enough to end the game after five innings due to the game being in run-rule status.

In defeat, Gonzalez was 2-for-3 with two runs scored, Cox hit an RBI double and both Sydney Weedon and Channing Wilson doubled for Sallisaw.

Delaney Compton (5-12) took the loss. JoLee Curson went the final four innings with five strikeouts.

In the season-ending loss to Cleveland, the Lady Tigers scored twice in the first inning and four runs in the second inning for a 6-0 lead.

A two-run third inning and a single run in the fourth inning for the Lady Diamonds cut the Sallisaw deficit to 6-3 after four innings, but they got no closer as Cleveland responded with a five-run fifth inning to take an 11-3 lead after five innings.

A single run in the sixth inning and a three-run seventh inning helped rally the Lady Diamonds to within four runs at 117, but the rally died — and their season came to a close.

In defeat, Cox was 2-for-3 with a run scored, Wilson was 2-for-5 with a double, a run batted in and a run scored, Compton doubled with an RBI and a run scored and Weedon hit her eighth home run of the season with three RBIs for Sallisaw.

Compton suffered the loss, although she recorded four strikeouts in 4.1 innings. Curson went the final 1.2 innings.

SEQUOYAH-CLAREMORE 5, ROLAND 1

Thursday at the Class 3A Regional Tournament in Chandler, the Lady Rangers went 1-2 in the regional, but it wasn’t enough to keep their season going into this week’s Super Regional.

The Lady Rangers ended the season at 14-15.

In the regional-tournament win over Sequoyah-Claremore, the Lady Rangers broke a 2-all tie with a three-run sixth inning.

For the game, McKinna Cooper doubled with an RBI, Addyson Clark tripled with two runs scored and an RBI, Kyleigh Knapp singled with an RBI, Karsyn Serjeant singled with an RBI and a run scored and Lillian Cole singled with an RBI for Roland. Cooper (14-15) got the win as she threw a four-hitter.

In the regional-tournament loss to Chandler, Chandler pitcher Kennedy Allen threw a two-hitter with 17 strikeouts.

The Lady Lions gave Allen all the run support needed with a four-run first inning. Chandler then added single runs in the fourth and sixth innings and four runs in the seventh inning.

In defeat, Adriana Moya and Laynie Roedenbeck each singled for Roland.

Cooper took the loss, going the first three innings. Knapp went the final four innings.

In the season-ending loss to Sequoyah-Claremore, the Lady Eagles rallied from a 1-0 second-inning deficit with a three-run third inning and a two-run fifth inning.

In defeat, Serjeant was 2-for-3 with an RBI, Knapp singled and scored once and Davis and Cole each singled for Roland.

Cooper suffered the loss, despite fanning four batters in six innings.

HOMINY 6, GORE 0

HOMINY 11, GORE 1, 5 INN.

At the Class A Regional Tournament, which took place Thursday and Friday in Hominy, the Lady Pirates got to the Friday afternoon’s loser’s-bracket final but had their season end there.

The Lady Pirates finished the season at 17-11.

In the first regional-tournament loss to Hominy, Hominy pitcher Keagan Walker threw a three-hitter with 10 strikeouts.

The Lady Bucks scored twice in the first inning, three runs in the second inning and once in the sixth inning.

In defeat, Emily Daily, Kennedy Williams and Sophie O’Connor each singled for Gore.

Alevia Reasnor (12-6) suffered the loss, despite recording seven strikeouts in seven innings.

In the regional-tournament win over Seiling, a passed ball scored Kylie McEver with the game-winning run in the eighth inning to keep Gore’s season going to that point.

For the game, Jimma Peevy was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs, McEver doubled and scored once, Williams singled and scored twice and Maddison Douglass singled for Gore.

Reasnor got the complete-game victory, fanning five batters in eight innings.

In the season-ending loss to Hominy, the Lady Bucks scored twice in the first inning and nine runs in the third inning for an 11-0 lead. The Lady Pirates got their lone run in the third inning on River Shoemake’s RBI single, scoring Daily. However, when the fifth inning ended and the Lady Bucks were up by 10 runs, the game ended due to being in run-rule status.

In defeat, Daily was 3-for-3 and scored the Lady Pirates’ only run, McEver was 2-for-2, Shoemake had an RBI single and Cheyenne Davidson singled for Gore.

Peevy (5-6) took the loss, going the first 2.2 innings with two strikeouts. Reasnor went the final 2.1 innings with two strikeouts.

SKIATOOK 2, MULDROW 0

Thursday at the Class 4A Regional Tournament in Tecumseh, the second loss to Skiatook in as many days ended the season for the Lady Bulldogs.

Skiatook scored twice in the second inning to break the scoreless deadlock.

In defeat, Noelia Parga was 2-for-3, while Kaydence Young, Raegan Newbern, Jaela Grayson and Amarie Duran each singled for Muldrow.

Jaydin Dean (8-8) was the hard-luck loser, fanning six batters in seven innings and throwing a four-hitter.
