Senior lineman embracing Senior Night, hoping for a district title
Sallisaw Black Diamonds senior lineman Bodie Adams is embracing tonight’s Senior Night game against the Ada Cougars.
“It’s exciting, but it’s also a little bit sad thinking about it being the last regular-season home game we’re ever going to have,” Adams said. “It’s kind of bittersweet, but I’m having fun.”
However, not only will a win over Ada tonight make it a successful Senior Night for the Black Diamonds’ seniors, it would mean either an outright District 4A-4 title or a share of the district title with Broken Bow, depending upon what the Savages do tonight against host Poteau.
“It would be amazing,” Adams said. “That’s what we’ve been working towards my whole high school career — and even before then. It would be awesome.”
Last year when the Black Diamonds and the Cougars played in the regularseason finale in Ada for the district championship, the Cougars handled the Black Diamonds 40-14. Adams is just glad to meet Ada once more with a district title on the line.
“There’s definitely some excitement,” he said. “It’s not very often you get a second chance at something like this. We’re getting a second chance this year. It’s the same team that beat us for the district championship last year. It’s going to be a good game. It will be fun.”
The Black Diamonds assured themselves of a Class 4A playoff berth with their 42-0 road win over Stilwell on Oct., 30. Now, they want to make it farther than they have in each of the last two seasons, which is losing in the state quarterfinals. Making the state semifinals would be special.
“It would be exciting,” Adams said. “It’s something we haven’t done in a while as a team and school. It would be good. It would feel nice to be the team that finally breaks through to the next level (state semifinals).”
Winning a state championship is nothing new for Adams, who won the Class 4A state wrestling title at 175 pounds on March 1. However, the senior lineman would love to end his high school football career with a state championship for the Black Diamonds.
“It would be awesome to end my (high school) football career with a state championship,” he said. “It would be indescribable.”
Adams has been getting college wrestling offers, but he wouldn’t turn down any college football offers.
“I’ve had to start thinking about college, at least a little bit,” the senior said. “I’ve had some college wrestling coaches reach out to me. I went to UCO (the University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond) for a visit for wrestling. I don’t think I’ll make it to the college level in football. I would take a peek at it (a college football offer).”
