Wolverines entertain Dibble in state quarterfinals

By DAVID SEELEY SPORTS EDITOR

The Vian Wolverines will not only look to win their 10th straight game, but punch their ticket to the Class 2A, Division II state semifinals tonight.

The Wolverines will welcome the Dibble Demons to town for a Class 2A, Division II state quarterfinal game at 7 tonight at St. John Stadium.

The Wolverines (10-1) opened what they hope will be a playoff run all the way to the state championship with a 60-14 rout of the Keys Cougars last Friday night at St. John Stadium.

In Vian’s nine-game winning streak, the Wolverines have outscored their opponents 432-110, with them hitting the half-a-century mark or greater twice and eclipsing the 40-point mark seven times.

The Demons (9-2) are coming off an upset playoffopening win as they knocked off the host Hennessey Eagles 57-41 last Friday night.

The Demons ended up in a three-way share for the District 2AII-2 championship with the Class 2A, Division II state champion Davis Wolves and the Holdenville Wolverines at 6-1 as the lone district loss suffered by Davis was a 28-27 road loss to Dibble in the district opener on Sept. 26.

The lone district loss suffered by Dibble came Oct. 16 as they fell 22-7 at Holdenville.

Since that district loss to Holdenville, the Demons have won four straight, and have outscored their opponents 196-60, with the first three wins of the winning streak seeing Dibble hold its opponents to single points — defeating Tishomingo 63-6 on Oct. 24, beating Coalgate 41-7 on Halloween night and defeating Beggs 35-6 on Nov. 7.

The Dibble-Vian state quarterfinal game winner will meet the Salina-Davis state quarterfinal game winner on Dec. 5 at a neutral site in the Class 2A, Division II state semifinals.

Should the state semifinal matchup be a state title game rematch with Davis, likely candidates for a neutral site could be McAlester’s Hook-Eales Stadium or Shawnee’s Jim Thorpe Stadium or Oklahoma Baptist University’s Crain Family Stadium at the Hurt Complex in Shawnee.

Should the state semifinal match-up be against Salina, a likely candidate for the game would be Northeastern Oklahoma State University’s Gable Field at Doc Wadley Stadium in Tahlequah.
