Sallisaw teams win Pryor Tournament openers, play in semifinals (UPDATED WITH FINAL TWO DAYS OF TOURNAMENT CANCELED)

By DAVID SEELEY SPORTS EDITOR

PRYOR—The Sallisaw High School basketball teams opened the Pryor Invitational Tournament victorious last Thursday afternoon with routs.

The Lady Diamonds routed the Vinita Lady Hornets 64-30 to set up today’s 4 p.m. championship semifinal against the Wagoner Lady Bulldogs, who lost to the Lady Diamonds in last year’s Class 4A District Tournament last February to give the Sallisaw girls their first district title in eight seasons.

The Black Diamonds handled the Sequoyah-Claremore Eagles 57-37 to make it to this evening’s 5:30 p.m. championship semifinal against Oologah.

It was discovered Wednesday morning from tournament director David Day that the final two days of the tournament, today and Monday, were canceled due to both the road conditions and scheduling conflicts.

In the girls’ game, leading 14-7 after a quarter, the Lady Diamonds (10-5) put away the game in the second quarter as they outscored the Lady Hornets 20-6 to take a 34-13 halftime lead, which became a 54-27 advantage after three periods.

For the game, Alayna Locust-Trammell led Sallisaw with a game-high 16 points and Emma Martin had 12 points to lead Sallisaw, followed by Sydney Weedon with nine points, Hannah Palmer with eight points, Katelyn Carlton with six points, Jaycie Cox, Kynli Adams and JoLee Curson with three points each and Channing Wilson with a free throw.

In the boys’ game, the Black Diamonds (8-7) led 23-14 after a quarter, 33-26 at halftime and 42-37 after three periods. They put away the game with a 15-0 fourth quarter.

For the game, Tae Muskrat-Flynn scored a game-high 14 points to lead Sallisaw, followed by Asa Ulrich and Grayson Griffey with nine points each, Brodi Nickell with eight points, Rowdi Nickell with seven points, Calvin Kilpatrick and Elijah Hill each with three points and Alex Gregory and Luke Warner with two points apiece.

Tuesday night’s home NOAA Conference games against Checotah were postponed due to the aftermath of last weekend’s winter storm, but they will be rescheduled at a later date since they are conference games.
