Sporting events being canceled due to winter storm’s aftermath

By DAVID SEELEY SPORTS EDITOR

Mother Nature’s winter storm she brought this past weekend is still being felt in the local sports realm.

Due to school closings all this week and scheduling conflicts for all eight teams, including the Sallisaw Lady Diamonds and Black Diamonds, the final two days of the Pryor Invitational Tournament were canceled. The original plan was to play championship and consolation semifinals this past Wednesday and the trophy games this Monday, but tournament director David Day said there were too many conflicts with which to have to deal.

The cancellations didn’t stop there.

The McAlester Invitational powerlifting meet for both girls, which was slated for Thursday after being postponed Wednesday, and boys, which was slated for today, was canceled.

The next powerlifting action will be next week, with Muldrow going to the Checotah Invitational at 9 a.m.

Wednesday, the Sallisaw Black Diamonds going to the Okemah Invitational at 9 a.m. Thursday and the Sallisaw Black Diamonds, the Roland Rangers and the Gore Pirates going to the Okemah Invitational at 9 a.m. next Friday.

Thursday night’s Vian home games against Spiro at B.J. Traw Gymnasium and Gore’s home games against Panama at Gore Event Center also were canceled due to weather.

The Panama-Gore games were rescheduled for 6 and 7:30 p.m. Feb. 9.

Today’s and Saturday’s high school athletic action is still scheduled to take place.

High school basketball games still on for tonight as of press time are Sallisaw at Poteau, Checotah at Roland, McCurtain at Webbers Falls, Muldrow at Stilwell, Central at Wister and Gans at Porum. Games are slated for 6 and 7:30 p.m.

Saturday high school basketball games still on as of press time are Central at Sallisaw and Muldrow at Roland, which was snowed out Tuesday night.

The Central-Sallisaw and Muldrow-Roland games are slated for 6 and 7:30 p.m. tip-offs.

Saturday afternoon’s Vian home games with Howe have been moved to 6 and 7:30 p.m. Feb. 9.

Gore has canceled its road games at Stuart on Saturday to be able to make up Tuesday’s snowed-out Riverside Conference home games with Gans, which will take place at 6 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Gore Event Center.

As for high school wrestling, all of our local wrestlers will be at their respective Maverick Conference Tournaments.

The Sallisaw Black Diamonds, Roland Rangers, Vian Wolverines and the Gore Pirates, along with the Muldrow Bulldogs junior high wrestlers, will be at the Maverick Conference Boys Tournament today and Saturday in Wilburton, with action beginning both days at 10 a.m.

The Lady Diamonds, Lady Rangers and Lady Wolverines, along with the Lady Bulldogs junior high wrestlers, will be at the Maverick Conference Girls Tournament today and Saturday in Fort Gibson, with action starting at 10 a.m. both days.

Also, former Vian Lady Wolverine softball player Maisie Wells and the Eastern Oklahoma State College Lady Mountaineers were snowed out of their season-opening doubleheader at Paris (Texas) Junior College on Wednesday. The Lady Mountaineers, who had their original seasonopening twinbill against the Southern Nazarene University junior varsity last Saturday snowed out, will try to get their season underway with a home DH against Arkansas-Rich Mountain beginning at 1 p.m. Thursday in Wilburton.
