Sallisaw coach gets 200th win as Black Diamonds pitcher no-hits Poteau, gets 10 Ks

By DAVID SEELEY SPORTS EDITOR

POTEAU — It was a special Tuesday evening at Poteau High School’s Town Creek Park for the Sallisaw Black Diamonds baseball team.

Not only did the Black Diamonds rout the host Pirates 13-0 in five innings as pitcher Dagan Grizzle threw a five-inning no-hitter with 10 strikeouts, but the win got Sallisaw coach Curtis Wartchow his 200th coaching victory.

All the run support Grizzle (1-0) needed was supplied in a six-run first inning, highlighted by Kase Adams’ grand-slam home run — his first homer of the spring — by the Black Diamonds (2-0 overall, 2-0 in District 4A-8 play).

Sallisaw scored in each of the five innings of the contest, scoring once in the second inning, three runs in the third inning, four runs in the fourth inning and another single run in the fifth inning.

For the game, Luke Pack was 3-for-4 with two doubles, three runs batted in and two runs scored, Easton Wolfe was 2-for-4 with his first home run of the season — a two-run shot — with three runs scored and two RBIs, Grizzle was 2-for-4 with two RBIs, Logan Bethel was 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI and a run scored, Rylan Eagle doubled and scored twice and Adams hit a grand-slam homer for Sallisaw.

VIAN 18, WESTVILLE 1, 5 INN.

Tuesday afternoon in Vian, the Wolverines (1-0) got the season started in great fashion with the rout of the Yellowjackets in the home opener.

The Wolverines jumped out to a 5-0 lead after an inning. After the Yellowjackets scored their lone run in the second inning, the Wolverines put the game into run-rule status with a three-run second inning, a four-run third inning and a six-run fourth inning.

For the contest, Zayden Cheater went 2-for-2 with a double, four runs scored and two runs batted in, Chris Cheater went 2-for-2 with a double, three RBIs and two runs scored and Riley Ellis doubled with three runs scored and an RBI for Vian.

Michael Polecat (1-0) got the complete-game, five-inning victory as he threw a one-hitter with 10 strikeouts.

WEBBERS FALLS 8, ARKOMA 4

Tuesday afternoon at Eual Carter Sports Complex, the Warriors (1-1) got their first win of the season.

The Warriors rallied from a 4-3 third-inning deficit by scoring twice in the third inning and three runs in the fourth inning for an 8-4 lead.

For the game, Trysten Wilbourn doubled with three runs batted in and a run scored, while Thadan Yandell singled with two RBIs for Webbers Falls.

Gunner Shelby (1-1), who suffered the loss in Monday’s season opener against Keota, got the win in relief Tuesday afternoon as he went the final four innings with five strikeouts. Brutus Robinson got the start went the first two innings with five Ks.

EDITOR’S NOTE: Gans had its road game against McCurtain on Tuesday canceled due to the Lady Bulldogs being at the Class B, Division II State Tournament quarterfinals, where they lost 34-20 to Lookeba-Sickles.
