MULDROW BASKETBALL

Seasons come to an end for Muldrow

By DAVID SEELEY SPORTS EDITOR

The Muldrow basketball teams saw their seasons come to an end on Day 1 of the Class 4A Area Tournament at Seminole High School as they lost their consolation quarterfinal games.

The 19th-ranked Bulldogs were upset 60-47 by the Purcell Dragons last Thursday afternoon, then the Lady Bulldogs fell 43-29 to the seventhranked Chickasha Fightin’ Chicks.

BOYS

PURCELL 60, MULDROW 47

The first quarter saw the Bulldogs (198) and the Dragons (22-9) exchange lead changes six times with three ties. After DeShawn Willson’s free throws put the ’Dogs ahead 16-15 with 37 seconds left in the period, Purcell’s Jaime Resendiz’s basket with seven seconds remaining put Purcell ahead 17-16 going into the second quarter.

While the Bulldogs tied the game at 23all with 33 seconds left before halftime after a slam dunk by Teaguen Collins and a steal and a lay-up by Willson, the Dragons ended the first half with a basket by Kyeston Martin to put Purcell ahead for good at 25-23 at halftime.

The Dragons built as much as a 19 points in the second half as a basket by Resendiz with 5:11 left to play put Purcell ahead 52-33.

“They (the Dragons) play fast,” Muldrow boys coach Terry Collins said. “We told our guys they would play fast. We just had to make sure we got in the right positions. We did that at times. We didn’t utilize our big (man, Parker Sevenstar). We couldn’t take advantage of that. It seemed like we couldn’t get the ball into him. He also seemed like he didn’t want it, either. They (the Dragons) played their game, and they won.”

In defeat, Collins scored a game-high 23 points to lead Muldrow, followed by Jesse Kilinc with seven points, Parker Sevenstar with six points, Willson with five points and D.J. Massey and Jermauree Palmer with three points apiece.

GIRLS

CHICKASHA 43, MULDROW 29

The Lady Bulldogs (17-10) kept the game close in the first quarter as a basket by Leni Cox with 3:23 left in the period knotted the contest at 8-all. A pair of free throws by Brynlie Alexander with 1:03 remaining in the quarter gave the Fightin’ Chicks (25-8) a 10-8 lead heading into the second period.

It was the second quarter where the Fightin’ Chicks took control of the game, opening the period with an 11-2 run, capped by a basket by Addison Ferguson with 3:39 left before halftime, to give Chickasha a 21-10 lead.

“We had shots there (during the first half of the second quarter),” Muldrow girls coach Jana Armer said. “We just missed them. The difference there was them making shots and us not.”

A basket by Kilah Ellingberg with 2:06 remaining in the first half cut Muldrow’s deficit to 21-14. That ended up being as close as the Lady Bulldogs got.

The Fightin’ Chicks took a 23-15 lead into the locker rooms at halftime, which became a 37-21 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.

“I couldn’t be more proud of my kids,” Armer said. “They played hard until the buzzer went off. That’s all I ever ask of them is to play as hard as they can. Things just didn’t go our way.”

In defeat, Kilah Ellingberg led Muldrow with a game-high 18 points, followed by Kayla Ellingberg with four points, Cox, London Hardin and Tae Williams with two points each and Grecie Prewett with a free throw.
