VHS choir wins another state title
The Vian High School Choral Competitive Ensemble traveled to Oklahoma City to compete at OSSAA State Vocal Music Contest on April 28 to compete. The ensemble competed in OSSAA’s 3A division and won another state title ranking for the second year in a row.
OKLAHOMA CITY — The Vian High School Choral Competitive Ensemble competed at the OSSAA State Vocal Music Contest on April 28. The ensemble competed in OSSAA’s 3A division and won another state title ranking for the second year in a row.
Soloists Gavin Stinnett and Rayken Massey, and duet group, Emilee Cook-Cobb and Gavin Stinnett also received top superior ratings along with medals. Vian Choir won 11 state medals. In order for the choir to even compete at the state level, they had to receive top superior ratings at OSSAA’s district contests back in March at Tahlequah High School.
“We’ve had a wonderful year of competition. Rayken Massey, Emilee Cook-Cobb, and Gavin Stinnett all made OKCDA and OKMEA All-State Choirs earlier in the year. Rayken Massey ranked first in district regionals,” Christina Herriman, Vian Choir Director, said.
“We had seven make district regionals earlier in the year as well for OSSAA’s Eastern District Honor Choir. Cook-Cobb and Stinnett are seniors this year and will graduate soon. They were instrumental in the choir the past few years and I’m very sad to see them go, but I know they’ll do amazing things in life.”
Stinnett received a top tier music scholarship to Southern Nazarene University, in Bethany, along with an academic scholarship as well. He is majoring in vocal performance.
“I know he’s going to do great things in the world of music!” Herriman said.
Cook-Cobb plans to major in psychology and further her education as well. Her goal is to be a family counselor.
“I’m so proud of these students and all their accomplishments! It’s been a wonderful year and I feel so blessed to work with all of these students. I look forward to next year to see what they will accomplish next!” she concluded.
