Pirates look to end 2-game losing streak on Senior Night vs. Haskell Haymakers

By DAVID SEELEY SPORTS EDITOR

After opening the season 6-0, the Gore Pirates have lost their last two games — a losing streak that hasn’t happened for quite a number of years.

After opening the season 6-0, the Gore Pirates have lost their last two games — a losing streak that hasn’t happened for quite a number of years.

“We just have to keep on grinding and keep working, and face those peaks and valleys,” Gore coach Brandon Ellis said. “We have to do our job, and continue to work to get out of this valley (two-game losing streak). I think the kids are ready to get back on a winning streak.”

Ellis knew the last three weeks of District A-8 play was going to be the toughest part of the schedule.

“We knew going into this season that the gauntlet with Pocola, Central and Panama was going to be tough,” he said. “It showed kind of how thin we were. We had some banged-up injuries and things of that nature. We’re not 100 percent healthy, but we’re healthier than what we were — so that’s a plus — but we still have to go play because I know they (Haskell Haymakers) will bring their A-game.”

The Pirates (6-2 overall, 3-2 in district play) will look to end their two-game losing streak on Senior Night when they entertain the Haskell Haymakers at 7 tonight at K.G. Horn Stadium.

The Haymakers (2-6, 1-4) lost 60-16 last week, which followed their lone District A-8 win — a 43-6 rout of Canadian on Oct. 12. Their only other win came on Week 1, a 20-12 victory over Caney Valley.

“They have a really athletic quarterback,” Ellis said about the Haymakers. “They’re big up front. They got a little wide receiver — he’s a really good athlete that they like to go to.”

Ellis said the key to winning tonight and ending the two-game losing streak will be good, consistent play from the Gore offense.

“Our defense has been playing great all year, and they need to continue to do so,” he said. “Our offense has to capitalize off that. The offensive output is there, and at that time we were 100 percent completely healthy. We’ve got a really good game plan going into this offensively that we really feel will make an impact in the game. We’ve spent the last two days fine-tuning it. Hopefully, we can put some points on the board.”
