Eleven county grapplers advance to state tournament

HIGH SCHOOL BOYS WRESTLING

Eleven county high school wrestlers qualified for this week’s State Wrestling Tournament in Oklahoma City by finishing fifth or better in their respective regional tournaments on Saturday.

Nine Sallisaw wrestlers advanced to the state tournament with top 5-or-higher finishes at the Class 4A East Regional Tournament at Catoosa.

Sallisaw freshmen Mattix Casebolt (113-pound division) and Bodie Adams (175) placed third in the regional tournament, senior Kiowa Coffman (165) finished fourth and senior Ryan Honeycutt (285), juniors Mason Duke (132), Caden Pollard (190) and Noah Flores (215), sophomore Aiden Ruiz (144) and freshman Morgan Duke (106) placed fifth.

Also competing for the Black Diamonds in the regional tournament were junior Aaron File (150-pound division), sophomore Parker Frederick (126) and freshmen Dawson Glover (138) and Austin File (157).

The Black Diamonds registered 116.5 points and placed seventh in the tournament and Catoosa (264.5) was the east regional champion.

Vian’s Gunner Richey and Jordan Morris qualified for the state tournament by finishing third and fifth, respectively, at Saturday’s 3A West Regional Tournament at Perry.

Also competing for the Wolverines in the regional tournament were senior Nick Scoggins (215-pound division) and juniors Lane Jameson (190) and Brandon Lamar (132).

The Wolverines scored 50 points and placed 16th in the tournament, which was won by Blackwell (324.5 points).

Vian girls’ regional champions Taya Hunt (140-pound division) and Avery Richey (135) will attempt to win their second straight state titles inside the State Fair Arena and Sallisaw’s Hannah Lightfoot (190) will try to claim her first state title at the State Girls Wrestling Tournament, which also gets underway Friday in Oklahoma City. Lightfoot placed third in the recent girls’ regional tournament at Sallisaw.
