No. 4 Idabel ends Lady Rangers’ win streak, season
By Lea Lessley Sports Writer

ADA – Class 3A fourth-ranked Idabel ended the No. 17 Lady Rangers’ four-game winning streak and season Saturday night inside Ada High School’s Cougar Activity Center with a 57-45 win over Roland in the Area III consolation final.

Roland reached the area consolation final by beating Eufaula on Friday and Marlow on Thursday at Ada.

Idabel 57, Roland 45

Idabel 6-foot-6 junior center Mary Carden scored a game-high 25 points Saturday night as the Lady Warriors (25-2 overall) advanced to this week’s state tournament with the area consolation final victory over the Lady Rangers (19-11).

Roland’s Haven Freeman, Addison Cole and Lilly Medicine Bird each made a 2-point field goal in the opening period, but Carden’s six points helped Idabel go in front 12-6.

Idabel led 32-18 at the break after adding eight (20-12) points to its advantage in the second stanza. The Lady Rangers’ Kynlei Earnhart and Laikyn Conaway each hit a 3-pointer in the quarter, and Medicine Bird and Freeman also scored three points apiece for Roland.

Behind the scoring of Freeman (5 points), Jazlynn Tehee (4) and Cole (3-pointer), the Lady Rangers trimmed two points (14-12) off the deficit in the third frame.

Each team registered 13 points in the final eight minutes. Freeman (4 for 4 at the foul line and 6 points) and Cole (2 for 2 at the line and 5 points) were Roland’s top scorers in the period, and Carden totaled nine points for the Lady Warriors.

Scoring for the Lady Rangers in the game were Freeman (16 points), Cole (10), Medicine Bird (9), Tehee (4), and Earnhart and Conaway (3 each).

Roland 44, Eufaula 40

Eight days after falling 38-35 to Eufaula on a 3-pointer at the buzzer in a regional semifinal contest at Roland, the Lady Rangers downed the Lady Ironheads in a Class 3A area consolation semifinal game Friday afternoon at Ada to keep their state tournament hopes alive.

In the opening stanza, Haven Freeman registered six points and Addison Cole added four as the Lady Rangers (19-10 overall) went in front 12-7.

With 6:08 remaining in the second quarter, Kynlei Earnhart’s 3-pointer from the wing gave Roland a 17-9 advantage, and the Lady Rangers led 23-15 at the 2:34 mark following Lilly Medicine Bird’s sixth point of the period. Freeman’s layup with 2:16 to go ended the scoring before the half, and Roland led 25-15 at the break.

The Lady Rangers led 30-18 almost midway through the third stanza following Madison Jetton’s wing 3-pointer and Medicine Bird’s pair of foul shots, but No. 18 Eufaula (16-10) used a 7-0 run to trim the deficit to five (30-25).

Jordas McClish (4 points) and Madison Ballard (3-pointer) recorded the Lady Ironheads’ final points of the period.

Behind the scoring of Cole (layup and 3-pointer) and Medicine Bird (layup), the Lady Rangers went in front 37-25 at the 6:20 mark of the final frame before Kambry Williams’ three 3-pointers fueled an 11-0 Eufaula run to cut the deficit to one (37-36) with 2:12 remaining. The Lady Rangers led 42-36 with 1:18 to go following Cole’s 3-pointer from the key and Medicine Bird’s inside basket, and Freeman’s two free throws with 30 seconds left helped seal the win.

Cole (14 points), Medicine Bird (12) and Freeman (10) scored in double figures for Roland in the contest, and Jetton, Earnhart (3 each) and Jazlynn Tehee (2) also registered points for the Lady Rangers.

Scoring for Eufaula were Kambry Williams (18 points), Ballard (9), Allie Anderson (5), McClish (4), Avery Williams (3) and Shyanne Madewell (1).

Roland 44, Marlow 38 OT

Roland’s Haven Freeman scored 10 of her game-high 26 points in the extra period Thursday night at Ada, as the No. 17 Lady Rangers (18-10 overall) topped the No. 12 Lady Outlaws (19-8) in the area consolation quarterfinal contest.

In the first quarter, Freeman (5 points) and Kynlei Earnhart (3) each hit a 3-pointer for Roland, but Marlow went in front 11-10.

Freeman registered nine of Roland’s 10 points in the second period, and the Lady Outlaws trailed 20-17 at intermission after scoring six points.

The Lady Rangers’ Laikyn Conaway made a 3-pointer in the third stanza, but Marlow trimmed two points (8-6) off the deficit (26-25).

Roland led 34-27 with 4:38 to go in the fourth frame following Addison Cole’s two foul shots, but a 3-pointer by Marlow’s Allye Haile tied the score at the 1:45 mark. Cole drew an offensive foul with 25.7 seconds remaining, and the game went into overtime after Roland’s last-second shot was no good. Prior to Cole’s foul shots, Jazlynn Tehee knocked down two 3-pointers for the Lady Rangers.

Forty-four seconds into the extra period, Freeman’s corner 3-pointer gave the Lady Rangers a 37-34 advantage. Freeman made her second trey after Marlow closed to within one (37-36) moments later, and the sophomore went 3 for 4 at the foul line in the final 40 seconds to help secure the win.

Trailing Freeman in scoring for Roland were Tehee (6 points) along with Cole, Medicine Bird, Earnhart and Conaway (3 each).

Marlow’s top two scorers in the game were Whitney Wade (12 points) and Carson Lovett (10).
