Wolverines finish 3rd in Central Tiger Shootout

Class 2A No. 9 Vian shut out Westville 12-0 on Saturday at Central to finish third in the Central Tiger Shootout.

Stilwell downed the Wolverines 8-3 on Friday in a semifinal contest and Vian topped Central 8-1 on Thursday in its tournament opener.

Vian defeated Rejoice Christian 9-1 on Friday at home in a non-tournament contest.

Vian 12, Westville 0

Diego Ramos hit a grand slam and drove in seven runs Saturday as the Wolverines beat the Yellowjackets in the third-place game of the Central Tiger Shootout.

The Wolverines scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning before ending the three-inning, run-rule game with six runs in the third frame.

Ramos (2 home runs) and Riley Ellis (1 homer) each had two hits for the Wolverines and Draighton Fletcher and Michael Polecat added a double apiece.

Ellis drove in two runs and Brandon Redburn, Cash Collins and Polecat had one RBI apiece.

Ellis (3.0 innings) struck out three and walked none while allowing two hits and no earned runs in earning the victory on the mound.

Westville committed two errors and Vian had none.

Stilwell 8, Vian 3

The Class 4A Indians registered four runs in the top of the second inning Friday to break a 2-2 tie and Stilwell went on to down the Wolverines in the Central Tiger Shootout semifinal contest.

Stilwell took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first but Diego Ramos’ two-run homer in the bottom of the frame tied the score.

Ramos’ solo homer in the bottom of the third inning sliced a run off Stillwell’s 6-2 advantage. The Indians scored a run apiece in the fourth and seventh frames.

Vian totaled four hits in the game and Draighton Fletcher (double) and Riley Ellis contributed a hit apiece for the Wolverines.

Ramos drove in all of Vian’s runs. Connor Collins (7.0 innings) went the distance on the mound for the Wolverines. The senior struck out five and walked one while giving up eight hits and six earned runs.

Vian committed two errors in the game and Stilwell had one.

Vian 8, Central 1

Vian pitcher Diego Ramos struck out 15 batters while allowing two hits in his six innings of work Thursday as the Wolverines defeated the Tigers in a first-round Central Tiger Shootout game.

In the top of the second inning an error helped the Wolverines take a 2-0 lead and Vian added a run in the fourth. Diego Ramos and Lynden Manning drove in runs in the Vian fourth as the Wolverines registered four runs.

The Tigers got on the board in the bottom of the sixth and Vian recorded its final run in the seventh.

Manning hit a home run in the fourth and Ramos added a four-bagger in the fifth inning.

Brandon Redburn, Manning, Connor Collins and Draighton Fletcher had multiple hits for the Wolverines and Redburn went 4 for 5 at the plate and Manning was 3 for 4.

Ramos, Cash Collins and Destry Bethel had a hit apiece for the Wolverines.

Aiden Sainer and Mekko Ariza each had a hit for the Tigers.

Ramos (6.0 innings) walked six and allowed one earned run and Redburn (1.0) finished the game for Vian.

Central’s Connor Walters (4.0 innings) struck out five and walked two while allowing 10 hits and seven earned runs and in relief Waylen Campbell (3.0) struck out one and walked one while giving up four hits and one earned run.

Central committed two errors and Vian had one.

Vian 9, Rejoice Christian 1

The Wolverines scored a combined five runs in the first two innings and two apiece in the fifth and sixth frames as Vian downed Rejoice Christian at home in a regular-season game on Friday.

Rejoice Christian registered its run in the top of the first frame.

Vian totaled 11 hits in the contest and Destry Bethel, Brandon Redburn and Diego Ramos each had two hits apiece. Draighton Fletcher, Connor Collins, Cash Collins, Riley Ellis and Lynden Manning added a hit apiece.

Ramos had two doubles and Bethel and Ellis added one apiece each and Ramos led Vian with four RBIs.

Bethel (6.0 innings) struck out seven and walked two while allowing one hit and no earned runs on the mound.

Rejoice Christian committed four errors and Vian had two.
