Dentons donate items to historical society
Tommie Denton (LEFT) 71, and James Denton (RIGHT) 81, both of Sallisaw, donated several items to the Sequoyah County Historical Society on Wednesday that once belonged to the Denton Shoe Shop in downtown Sallisaw. The two said their relative, Sherrel Denton, operated the only shoe repair business around Sallisaw for about 36 years (until his death). Tommie Denton said Sherrel owned the same cobbler hammer for all those years and wore a groove in the metal of it. The hammer was donated to the Historical Society, along with the original wood sign which hung in front of the business, photos of Sherrel working on shoes in the shop, and the original full page newspaper article published in Your TIMES in the 1970s.
