Sallisaw girls drop season-opening district twinbill to Broken Bow

By DAVID SEELEY SPORTS EDITOR

The 2023 fast-pitch softball season did not get started the way the Sallisaw Lady Black Diamonds wanted it to Tuesday afternoon as they dropped a road district doubleheader to the Broken Bow Lady Savages by scores of 14-3 and 14-0.

In the opener, the Lady Black Diamonds (0-2 overall, 0-2 in district play) got on the board first as an RBI groundout by Channing Wilson and a two-out RBI single by Madison Green put Sallisaw ahead 2-0, but from there it was all Lady Savages as they scored four runs in the first and second innings and three more runs in the third inning for an 11-2 lead.

Sallisaw’s final run scored in the fourth inning on Jaycie Cox’s sacrifice fly, scoring Makenna Bormann.

In defeat, Cox was 2-for-2 with a run batted in, while Delaney Compton and Jaydlyn Dry each doubled.

In the nightcap, the Lady Black Diamonds were one-hit, with that hit being a Wilson single.

The Lady Savages jumped out to a 3-0 lead after an inning and were never headed.

EUFAULA 11, VIAN 1

Tuesday afternoon in Checotah, the Lady Ironheads scored three runs in the first inning and seven runs in the second inning for a 10-0 lead before the Lady Wolverines (0-2) scored their lone run on LaKaila Drew’s two-out, RBI single in the third inning.

In defeat, Drew, Maisie Wells, Kala Gibbins and Rayleigh Terrill all singled for Vian. Gibbins (0-2) took the loss.

WAGONER 15, GORE 0

Tuesday afternoon in Wagoner, the Lady Pirates (01) mustered only one hit, that being a single by River Shoemake.

The Lady Bulldogs scored four runs in the first and third innings, then added seven runs in the fourth inning to put the game into run-rule status.

Kendra Huckbay (0-1) took the loss for the Lady Pirates, whose second attempt to play its home opener against Mounds was rained out Wednesday afternoon. Gore coach Michael Randolph said another attempt to reschedule the contest for a second time is in the works.

GORE TOURNAMENT MOVED TO OKTAHA

Gore coach Michael Randolph announced Wednesday night that since the Lady Pirates’ home softball field is too wet for any action, the 2023 Gore Tournament is being moved to Oktaha.

Thursday’s slate of games, featuring the Roland Lady Rangers, was scheduled to take place at the times scheduled.

Today’s games will have Sallisaw vs. Gore at 10 a.m., Webbers Falls vs. Stilwell at 11:30 a.m., the two winners meeting at 1 p.m. and the two losers playing at 2:30 p.m. Saturday’s trophy games will be the seventh-place game at 10 a.m., the fifth-place contest at 11:30 a.m.; the third-place game at 1 p.m. and the championship contest at 2:30 p.m.

ROLAND GAME WITH HEAVENER RAINED OUT AGAIN, RESCHEDULED FOR AUG. 23

For the second straight day, the Roland Lady Rangers had their home opener against Heavener rained out Wednesday afternoon after it was washed out Tuesday.

Roland coach Mason Wiggins said the game will be rescheduled for 4 p.m. Aug. 23.
