Wolverines pull away late to down Adair, rematch with Washington is Friday at ECU

By DAVID SEELEY SPORTS EDITOR

ADAIR — The Vian Wolverines made it 2-for-2 on Class 2A playoff road games Friday night as they handled the Adair Warriors 45-20 in a second-round match-up.

The Wolverines (8-4) will get a rematch against the Washington Warriors in the Class 2A state quarterfinals at 7 p.m. this Friday at East Central University’s Norris Field at Koi Ishto Stadium in Ada. The Warriors opened the season with a 55-13 rout of the Wolverines on Aug. 25 in Washington, Okla.

Trailing 6-0 in the first quarter, the Wolverines got on the board on a 42-yard touchdown run by Masyn Wright with 9:15 left in the first quarter. Mikayah Mendoza hit the extra point to put Vian ahead 7-6 after a period.

After the Warriors (8-4) scored two TDs to take a 20-7 lead with 8:04 left before halftime, Jacob Brannick caught a 29-yard TD pass from Wright. Mendoza hit the PAT to cut the Vian deficit to 20-14 with 6:04 remaining in the first half.

The Wolverines took the lead for good with three more touchdowns to end the first half. Wright got a hat trick as he scored his second and third TDs on runs of 14 and 5, which sandwiched a 15-yard blocked punt return for a touchdown by Tristan Wiley. Mendoza hit all three extra points to give Vian a 35-20 halftime lead.

Mendoza’s 28-yard field goal with 5:14 left in the third quarter upped Vian’s advantage to 3820 after three quarters, then Draighton Fletcher’s 42-yard TD run with 9:04 left in the game capped the night of scoring.

For the game, Wright threw for 115 yards and a touchdown, while rushing for 165 yards and three TDs. Fletcher used for 135 yards and a touchdown, while catching four passes for 77 yards. Brannick caught a 29-yard TD pass from Wright. Mendoza hit the PAT.
