Lady Bulldogs take 3rd-place trophy; Bulldogs finish 6th

By DAVID SEELEY SPORTS EDITOR

TAHLEQUAH — The Muldrow Lady Bulldogs ended this past week by picking up some tournament hardware.

The Lady Bulldogs claimed third place in last week’s second annual Sequoyah Invitational Tournament at Sequoyah-Tahlequah High School by defeating the host Lady Indians 4035 on Saturday afternoon. The Lady Bulldogs split their first two games in the tournament, handling Ada 43-26 in Thursday’s opening-round game before losing Friday’s semifinals 38-30 to Anadarko Riverside.

The ’Dogs lost Saturday’s consolation finals 42-36 to the host Indians after losing Thursday’s opener 60-41 to Alma, Ark., but defeating the Fort Gibson junior varsity 67-27. In the girls’ third-place game, the Lady Bulldogs (3-1) rallied from a 30-29 third quarter deficit by outscoring the Lady Indians 11-5 in the final period for the come-from-behind win. For the game, Kennedi Wight, who was named to the all-tournament team, led Muldrow with a gamehigh 19 points, followed by Cailey Grinstead with eight points, London Hardin with five points and Claire Tabor and Kayla Ellingberg with four points apiece.

In the semifinal loss to Riverside, the Lady Braves rallied from a 19-16 halftime deficit by outscoring the Lady Bulldogs 24-11 in the second half.

In defeat, Wight scored a game-high 19 points to lead Muldrow, followed by Tabor with six points, Katelynn Moore and Maysi Fields with two points each and Ellingberg with a free throw.

In the opening-round win over Ada, the Lady Bulldogs doubled the Lady Cougars 12-6 in the first quarter, but a 12-9 second quarter by Ada cut its deficit to 2118 at halftime. However, Muldrow outscored Ada 22-8 in the second half — including a 15-0 fourth quarter — to seal the deal.

For the game, Wight and Grinstead each scored a game-high 14 points to lead Muldrow, followed by Tabor with six points, Fields and Chloee Clark with three points each, Moore with two points and Ellingberg with a free throw.

In the boys’ opening-round game, Teaguen Collins scored 19 points to lead the Bulldogs (2-2), followed by Drew Prewett with seven points, Parker Sevenstar with six points, Kashan Bukhari with five points, Deshawn Wilson with four points, Gabe Miller with two points and Jamauree Palmer with a free throw.

In the boys’ consolation championship, Prewett scored 11 points and Jesse Kilinic added 10 points to lead Muldrow, followed by Jaxson Antwine with nine points, Collins with six points, Wilson, Hayden Bullock and Gunner Vanscoy each with six points and Bukhari, Trenton Irvan and Gibson Price each with four points apiece.

There was nothing more reported on the consolation finals by press time.
