Gore hoopsters sweep home games vs. Gans

The Gore High School basketball teams rebounded from their trophy game losses last Saturday at the Cross Telephone Tournament in Porum by sweeping home games from county rival Gans on Tuesday night at Gore Event Center.

The Lady Pirates, who beat the Lady Grizzlies in the opening round of the Cross Telephone Tournament on Jan. 18, got their second victory over the Gans girls in five days as the Gore ladies prevailed 26-25.

The Pirates completed the sweep with a 44-34 victory over the Grizzlies.

In the girls’ game, the Lady Pirates (4-13) trailed 8-2 after a quarter, but outscored Gans 24-17 over the final three quarters to get the come-from-behind win.

For the game, Kaitlyn Byrne led Gore with a game-high 11 points, followed by Natalie Casteel with four points, River Shoemake with three points and Oaklei Thornton, Ricki Huckbay, Emily Daily and Paige Curran with two points apiece.

In defeat, Melania Paniagua led the Lady Grizzlies (5-11) with 10 points. followed by Brianna Burris with seven points, Aaliyah Taylor with four points and Reina Gaona and Stevie Pratt with a free throw.

In the boys’ contest, the Pirates (10-8) trailed 12-7 after a quarter, but outscored the Grizzlies 37-22 the rest of the way to complete the comeback.

For the game, Gore had a trio of players hit for double figures, led by Journey Shells with a game-high 16 points, followed by Cain Cooper with 13 points and Burr Jaymes with 10 points. Bryon McDuffie had seven points, while Tate Brooksher added three points.

In defeat, Mayson Clifton, Josh Brunk and Nakota White each scored nine points to lead the Grizzlies (69), followed by Ashton Langston with six points and Gunner Vascoy with a free throw.
