Black Diamonds go 3-1 in Tiger/Zebra Classic

By DAVID SEELEY SPORTS EDITOR

The Sallisaw Black Diamonds baseball team went 3-1 in last weekend’s Tiger/Zebra Classic, which took place Thursday through Saturday at both Pryor and Claremore.

The Black Diamonds defeated Skiatook 13-4 on Thursday in Pryor, then split Friday’s games in Pryor — routing Glenpool 16-3 but falling to the host Tigers 5-4 in eight innings. Sallisaw bounced back with a 13-9 victory over Lincoln Christian in Claremore.

In the win over Skiatook, the Black Diamonds (10-5) jumped out early and often, scoring five runs in the first inning and four runs in the second inning for a 9-0 lead.

For the game, Cole Stephens was 3-for-3 with a triple, four runs batted in and two runs scored, Parker Pratt was 3-for 3 with two RBIs and a run scored, Broque Oft was 2-for-3 with three runs scored, Brock Streun was 2-for-2 with four RBIs and two runs scored and Coleman Wasson was 2-for-3 with two RBIs for Sallisaw.

Wasson (1-0) got his first win of the season, going all five innings with five strikeouts and throwing a five-hitter.

In the victory over Glenpool, the Black Diamonds broke a 2-all tie with a four-run second inning and an eight-run third inning to take a 14-2 lead after three innings.

For the game, Luke Pack was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and an RBI, Streun was 2-for-2 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored and Easton Wolfe doubled with two RBIs for Sallisaw, which took advantage of eight Glenpool errors that allowed 10 unearned runs to score.

Wolfe (2-1) got the win, going the first three innings with three Ks. Pack went the final two innings.

In the loss to Pryor, the Tigers walked it off in the eighth inning after tying the game at 4-all in the seventh inning to force extra innings.

In defeat, Creed Nelson was 2-for-5 with a double, Cole Mayfield doubled and Streun tripled and scored once for Sallisaw.

Dagan Grizzle (0-1) suffered his first loss of the season, pitching the final 1.2 innings with three strikeouts, but allowing the game-tying and gamewinning run to score — but the gamewinning run was unearned due to the second of two errors in the game by the Black Diamonds. Gracin Marshall got the start and went the first four innings with two strikeouts. Brodie Cameron went the next two innings.

In the win over Lincoln Christian, the Black Diamonds trailed 6-5 after scoring twice in the fifth inning, but they erupted for eight runs in the seventh inning to take a 13-6 lead to help snatch away a win from the jaws of defeat.

For the game, Braxton Lamb was 3-for-3 with two doubles, four RBIs and a run scored, Streun was 3-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI, Oft was 2-for-3 with a double and three runs scored, Stephens was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored and Mayfield was 2-for-4 with a double for Sallisaw.

Kase Adams (1-0) got the win in relief, going 2.1 innings with two strikeouts. Brodi Nickell got his first save of the season, getting the final two outs. Lamb started and went the first four innings with a strikeout.

Sallisaw had its district road game against Jay rained out Monday. After the two teams were slated to meet Tuesday evening in Sallisaw, Monday’s game will be made up at 5 p.m. today in Jay.
