Muldrow sweeps Sallisaw in doubleheader

By DAVID SEELEY SPORTS EDITOR

The Muldrow Lady Bulldogs swept a home doubleheader Tuesday evening from county rival Sallisaw by scores of 9-6 and 13-3 in four innings.

The games originally were to have been played in Sallisaw, but its field was too wet. So, the games were moved to Muldrow.

A third team was to have been a part of the festivities, the Gore Lady Pirates, but they canceled out.

In the opener down 5-0 in the first inning, the Lady Bulldogs (6-6), winners of four straight, started the comeback with a two-run first inning and a fiverun third inning to take the lead for good at 7-5.

Sallisaw’s Sydney Weedon hit a twoout, RBI double to score Abby Kate Qualls in the fourth inning to cut the deficit to 7-6, but the Lady Diamonds (1-10) got no closer.

The Lady Bulldogs got two insurance runs in their half of the fourth inning on back-to-back, two-out RBI doubles by Jaydin Dean and Kaira Qualls to provide some insurance.

The game could not have started any better for the Lady Diamonds as Weedon’s two-run home run, her first of the year, and KeLee Curson’s three-run double put Sallisaw ahead 5-0.

For the game, Cailey Grinstead doubled with a run batted in and two runs scored, Dean hit an RBI double with two RBI and scored twice and Kaira Qualls doubled with two RBIs and a run scored for Muldrow. Grinstead (6-6) got the win.

In defeat, Weedon was 2-for-3 with a double, a two-run homer and three RBIs, while Abby Kate Qualls was 2-for-2 with two infield singles and a run scored for Sallisaw. Emma Lessley (1-10) took the loss.

In the nightcap, the Lady Bulldogs once more fell behind early, trailing 3-0 in the first inning, but rallied for their second comeback victory of the evening.

Grinstead’s RBI single and Dean’s two-run triple in the home half of the opening inning tied the game a 3-all.

Muldrow took the lead for good in the second inning as Kaydance Young’s two-out, three-run double put the Lady Bulldogs ahead 6-3 after two innings.

A seven-run third inning for the Lady Bulldogs put the game into runrule status. A two-RBI single by Ryah Keenan, a sacrifice fly by Ashley Price, an RBI single by Danica Tune, an RBI double by Amaya Duran and back-toback RBI singles by Grinstead and Dean produced the runs.

It was the long ball that got Sallisaw going in Game 2, much as was the case in Game 1. Channing Wilson hit a tworun homer, her third of the season, after an RBI single by Weedon to put Sallisaw ahead 3-0 in the first inning.

For the game, Dean was 3-for-3 with a triple, three RBIs and a run scored, Grinstead was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored, Duran doubled with two runs scored and an RBI and Young hit a three-RBI double for Muldrow. Grinstead got the win.

In defeat, Madison Green doubled with a run scored, while Wilson hit her third round-tripper of the season with two RBIs for Sallisaw. Lessley took the loss.

After both teams played Thursday in the Checotah Tournament, the Lady Bulldogs will play in a road three-way with Vian at Roland beginning at 5:30 today.

Next week, the Lady Diamonds will have a 4:30 p.m. Monday road game at Heavener, then have a home three-way with Locust Grove and Pocola beginning at 4 p.m. Tuesday, while the Lady Bulldogs have a Monday home game with Spiro followed by a Tuesday road game at Spiro.

GAMES RAINED OUT, CANCELED

Several Tuesday softball games were rained out. Games lost to Mother Nature were Central at Roland, Webbers Falls at Vian, Porum at Gans and Eastern Oklahoma State College at Carl Albert State College. The EOSC-CASC doubleheader has been rescheduled for 2 p.m. April 29 in Poteau.

Thursday’s Gore home game against Okmulgee was canceled. The Lady Pirates will play at 11 this morning at Crowder.

Thursday’s Gans-McCurtain game was rained out.
