Sallisaw a win away from Super Regional; Muldrow needs 3 wins to advance

By DAVID SEELEY SPORTS EDITOR

When this story is read this morning, the Sallisaw Black Diamonds may very well have won the Class 4A Regional Tournament and are prepping for next week’s super regional.

On Wednesday, the Black Diamonds won both games played, beating the Catoosa Indians 8-6 and winning 12-1 over the Glenpool Warriors, coached by former Sallisaw Black Diamond and Carl Albert State College Viking Dylan Thurber.

The Black Diamonds, weather permitting, were slated to try to win the regional title Thursday night against the winner of Thursday afternoon’s loser’s-bracket final between Muldrow and Glenpool. If Sallisaw lost, there will be a winner-take-all regional title game at 2 this afternoon.

The Bulldogs went 1-1 on the day, losing 7-4 to Glenpool, but eliminating Catoosa 13-3 in six innings.

SALLISAW 8, CATOOSA 6

The Black Diamonds (21-9), who trailed 6-5 entering the home half of the fifth inning, scored three runs to take the lead for good as Brock Streun’s lead-off inning solo home run, his fourth of the season, tied the game at 6-all. Then, a wild pitch scored Kase Adams for a 7-6 lead for Sallisaw. Cole Mayfield’s RBI groundout scored Cole Stephens for an 8-6 lead.

For the game, Streun hit a solo homer, and Luke Pack doubled and scored for Sallisaw.

Brodie Cameron (2-0) got the win in relief, going the final two innings. Easton Wolfe started and went the first two innings with three strikeouts. Gracin Marshall went the next three innings with three Ks.

SALLISAW 12, GLENPOOL 1

The Black Diamonds broke a 1-all tie with a two-run second inning as an error and a steal of home by Parker Pratt put Sallisaw up for good at 3-1. Sallisaw scored three runs in the fourth inning, twice in the sixth inning and four runs in the seventh inning to put away the game.

For the contest, Cole Mayfield was 2-for-3 with a run batted in, Pratt singled with three RBIs and a run scored, Luke Pack singled with an RBI and run scored, Broque Oft singled with two runs scored and an RBI, Brock Streun singled with an RBI, Cole Stephens scored once and had an RBI, Kase Adams scored twice and Braxton Lamb scored once for Sallisaw.

Creed Nelson (5-2) got the win, going five innings with seven strikeouts. Dagan Grizzle went the next 1.2 innings with three Ks, and Adams came in and got the final out on a strikeout. The trio combined on a fivehitter. GLENPOOL 7, MULDROW 4

The Bulldogs (15-9) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI groundout by Will Stratmann, an RBI single by Jonah Claborn and an error.

However, the Warriors scored four runs in the third inning to take a 4-3 lead, but the ’Dogs tied the game at 4-all on Seminole State College signee Reid Sutton’s RBI double in the fifth inning, scoring Gabe Miller.

However, Glenpool scored three runs in the sixth inning to break the 4-all tie.

In defeat, Sutton had an RBI double, Claborn had an RBI single and Jacob Gregory singled and scored for Muldrow.

Claborn (4-4) took the loss in relief, going the final 4.2 innings with four strikeouts. Drew Prewett got the start and went 2.1 innings with three Ks.

MULDROW 13, CATOOSA 3, 6 INN.

The Bulldogs scored twice in the second and third innings to break the scoreless deadlock for a 4-0 lead.

After the Indians scored three runs in the fourth inning to cut the deficit to 4-3, the ’Dogs scored five runs in the fourth inning and two runs in each of the fifth and sixth innings to put the game into run-rule status.

For the game, Reid Sutton was 3-for-4 with a double, a triple, a two-run home run and six runs batted in, Gabe Miller was 3-for-3 with a double, three runs scored and an RBI, Jonah Claborn was 3-for-4 with two RBIs, Jacob Gregory was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored, Wyatt Prewett was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Colton Pulliam doubled and scored twice for Muldrow.
