Wolverines participating in Sallisaw team camp Thursday, Friday

The Vian Wolverines, who started spring football practice May 13, will end the two-week practice period by participating in the Sallisaw Black Diamonds’ two-day team camp Thursday and Friday at Sallisaw’s Perry F. Lattimore Stadium.

“Location had a big deal to do with it,” Vian football coach Gary Willis said about why the Wolverines will be a part of the multiple-team football camp. “It’s 10 minutes away. That’s why we wanted to go there. Playing teams from the area is fine, just as long as there’s some good competition.”

There’s a lot of things Willis would like to see happen when the two-day camp ends, and spring practice will end, on Friday.

“We want to come out healthy, and get through spring ball,” he said. “We want to get everything installed. There’s things we want to look at, but we pretty much know what we are. I just want to see the kids go out and compete at a high level.”

The two-day team camp will be able to allow the Wolverines to go against other teams, including the Black Diamonds, as opposed to going against themselves as it has been since May 13.

“We get to go against somebody else.” Willis said. “The main thing is we want to see a high-level intensity. We want to get out of that thing healthy and ready to go in the fall.”

Willis said the Wolverines had a good first week of spring practice last week.

“It’s been going good,” he said. “We return everybody except three seniors, and only two of them started. We feel like we’re way ahead of where we were last year at this time. We picked up right where we left off. With kids growing, and (playing) a lot of sophomores last year, we feel we’re ahead of where we left off last year.”
